(Megan Gleason\/Source NM)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>More than $1 billion in additional compensation for victims of the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire was approved by the United States House of Representatives as part of a 4,100-page spending package that\u2019s heading to President Joe Biden\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p>The $1.45 billion comes on top of $2.5 billion passed earlier this year to pay property damage and other types of claims to the fire victims of New Mexico\u2019s biggest-ever wildfire, which started after the United States Forest Service botched prescribed burns.<\/p>\n<p>In total, fire victims will receive $3.95 billion in aid, minus administrative costs, and $140 million to revamp the drinking water system in Las Vegas, N.M., a town of about 14,000 people downriver of the fire. Floods in the burn scar contaminated the city\u2019s reservoirs.<\/p>\n<p>Members of New Mexico\u2019s congressional delegation have hailed the multibillion-dollar program as \u201chistoric\u201d and said the money will go to fully compensating victims of the fire, who up to this point received limited payments \u2013 if they received any \u2013 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the amount for N.M. approved Friday by Congress is lower than the initial request \u2013 $2.9 billion \u2013 from President Biden\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic U.S. Rep.
