(The Wild Animal Sanctuary via AP)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Uncredited<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>ALBUQUERQUE \u2013 A Bengal tiger cub found by Albuquerque police in a dog crate last month now has a new home in Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Officials at the ABQ BioPark Zoo, where the 4-month-old cub has been receiving care, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/2574052\/rescued-tiger-cub-gets-new-home-at-colorado-animal-sanctuary.html\" id=\"link-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Albuquerque Journal<\/a> that he was transferred to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Caretakers there have named him Duke after Albuquerque\u2019s nickname of Duke City.<\/p>\n<p>Albuquerque police officers served search warrants Jan. 10 on two residences in response to tips that a tiger was being illegally held at one of them.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities spotted a blood trail and followed it to an unlocked trailer and that\u2019s where the tiger was found.<\/p>\n<p>New Mexico bans residents from keeping tigers as pets and federal law now prohibits private owners from keeping tigers as pets or for breeding purposes.<\/p>\n<p>BioPark Zoo officials said the cub could not stay with them because he was too \u201cpeople-oriented.\u201d Also, he will eventually grow to be 400 pounds with long claws that can easily kill.<\/p>\n<p>He had to undergo a 30-day quarantine period there. During that time, the zoo worked with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish to find the tiger a permanent home.<\/p>\n<p>Because his genetic lineage was unknown, the animal was ineligible for a breeding program or zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=6ea89922-4780-5b8f-9953-e3af73fecf57&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Duke, a Bengal tiger cub, is seen in this February 2023 photo at The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado.
