The New Mexico-bred son of Shame On Charlie crossed the wire a length in front of late-running George Who, stopping the clock in 1 minute, 18.93 seconds for 6½ furlongs.

New Mexico Jeremy snapped a three-race losing streak with his win in the Diné. He most recently finished sixth in a fast allowance race at Sunland Park on March 28. Prior to that, he was a badly beaten ninth when asked to race a mile in the Red Hedeman Stakes at Sunland Park on Feb. 28.

Sunday’s win improves New Mexico Jeremy’s lifetime record to three wins from 14 starts with earnings over $165,000.

The win was one of two on the afternoon for Medellin, who has quickly opened up a sizable lead in the thoroughbred jockey standings this season. With just two more weekends of live racing left on the calendar, Medellin has scored 13 times, placing him four in front of Christian Ramos in the thoroughbred riders division.

Medellin has also won three quarter horse races this season, giving him 16 wins, just two off the overall lead which is held by Ramos, who has nine riding wins in both quarter horse and thoroughbred races this season.

Sent off at odds of 6.40-to-1, New Mexico Jeremy returned $14.80 to win. The $2 exacta with New Mexico Jeremy and George Who paid back $108.

George Who, ridden by Felipe Valdez for trainer Todd Fincher, finished well to earn the place, a half-length in front of Smartsrealgood, with Artful Critic rounding out the top four finishers.

New Mexico Jeremy, with jockey Alejandro Medellin in the irons, wins the $100,000 Diné Stakes at SunRay Park and Casino, Sunday, May 7, 2023.Coady Photography

Post time favorite Hennessy Looker RF, ridden by Ramos and also trained by Chavez, flashed some early speed before tiring and finishing seventh, beating just one horse across the wire.

Live racing resumes Friday at SunRay Park and Casino with a first post time of 2:15 p.m. There are only six more days of live racing remaining this season, which will draw to a close on Sunday, May 21.

[799,1250,1251

post-34149","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-farmington","tag-horse-racing","tag-sunray-park-and-casino
["GET
