(David Edward Albright\/Tri-City Record)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The new Michaels store celebrated its grand opening Saturday, May 6, making it the third arts and crafts box store in Farmington.<\/p>\n<p>The store, in San Juan Plaza, officially opened its doors for business April 21.<\/p>\n<p>Michaels Stores Inc., which has 1,161 retail stores in the United States, will compete with Hobby Lobby and Joann Fabric and Crafts for a share of the arts and crafts market in Farmington.<\/p>\n<p>The company states on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelspressroom.com\/about\" id=\"link-80e790c8a19b904ad14f2a75e6ce934b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>, \u201cWe believe anyone can make, and we\u2019re on a mission to inspire and encourage everyone to unleash his or her inner maker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Americans for the Arts Action fund\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsactionfund.org\/sites\/artsactionfund.org\/files\/2020-03\/New%20Mexico%20March%20Factsheet%202020_2.pdf\" id=\"link-b1f3253224367ad93fb35e5bf246baeb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020 report<\/a>, 4,362 arts-related businesses employ 15,678 people and the state\u2019s arts and culture sector contributes $2.67 billion to New Mexico\u2019s economy, representing 2.8% of the state\u2019s GDP.<\/p>\n<p>Such statistics do not take into account amateur artisans and crafters in the state. It is professional and hobby artists, artisans and crafters that the three arts and crafts stores in town rely on for business.<\/p>\n<p>The key to competing may lie in each store\u2019s specialty sections. (David Edward Albright\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Kylie Eckstein, who recently returned to her hometown of Farmington after living in Arizona, stopped by Michaels \u201cjust to check out the store.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dora Yazzie, who drives from the Carson area of the Navajo Reservation to shop in Farmington, said she was enjoying shopping alone at her own pace.
