{"id":33951,"date":"2023-05-19T21:55:06","date_gmt":"2023-05-20T03:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/stout-is-named-head-coach-of-aztec-high-wrestling-team\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T02:14:50","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T08:14:50","slug":"stout-is-named-head-coach-of-aztec-high-wrestling-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/stout-is-named-head-coach-of-aztec-high-wrestling-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Stout is named head coach of Aztec High wrestling team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=8c3b53cb-4d2b-55e3-b61a-07e90ffb783a&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"946\" height=\"1558\" alt=\"Levi Stout has agreed to be the new head coach for the Aztec High School wrestling team.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Levi Stout has agreed to be the new head coach for the Aztec High School wrestling team.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Aztec High School<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>AZTEC \u2013 The Aztec High School wrestling teams will have a new man in charge when the school year begins later this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Levi Stout, a former state champion wrestler as a student athlete at Aztec High School and former head coach at Piedra Vista, was named to take over the program this week.<\/p>\n<p>Stout, who previously served on the coaching staff at Dakota Wesleyan University before coaching at Piedra Vista from 2002 through 2014, will take over as head coach of one of the most dominant programs in New Mexico prep sports history.<\/p>\n<p>Stout will replace Herb Stinson, who officially stepped down shortly after the conclusion of the wrestling season last winter. Under Stinson\u2019s watch, the Tigers won 13 state team championships from 1982 through 2000, and again in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In all, the Aztec High School wrestling team has won a combined 20 state titles dating back to 1963.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up in this small community alongside this historic program, and I\u2019ve watched the program and the community go through the highest of highs and lowest of lows,\u201d Stout said. \u201cIt will be impossible to fill any shoes but I am committed to building a solid foundation and doing all of the little things correctly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a head coach at Piedra Vista, Stout led the Panthers to four state championships from 2011 through 2014 and had multiple individual state champions, including Anthony Juckes, one of only seven prep wrestlers in state history to win five consecutive individual state titles.<\/p>\n<p>The Tigers finished third in the state last season in the Class 4A state championship meet, behind Belen and district rival Bloomfield.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m more than satisfied that (Stout) will carry on the tradition of Aztec wrestling,\u201d said Stinson. \u201cHe has had success in the past and the last few years he has done all of the take down work in our room. When he was a state champion for me in 2000 he went undefeated and was a true leader in our room.
