(Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Each participant had to complete as many tricks as possibly during 60 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Repeated tricks were not counted, and if competitors washed out of the surf, their run ended. Each participant had three rounds to get their highest score. The round with the highest score was the one recorded by the judges.<\/p>\n<p>Brother and sister tandem Mason and Makinley Kate Hargrove from Phenix City, Alabama took home the championship in the men\u2019s senior and women\u2019s junior competitions.<\/p>\n<p>It was a big snow runoff year for the Animas River with the San Juan Mountain snowpack reaching 170% above normal.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=d6240367-2eb5-5dbc-9f47-89b3b80c0ace&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Mason Hargrove, from Phenix City Alabama, sponsored by Jackson Kayaks and NRS, plays in Smelter Rapid on Thursday at the Durango White Water Park while practicing to compete in Animas Rivers Days on June 2nd through the 4th at the whitewater park. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Mason Hargrove said when he first arrived for the weekend the river was running at about 4,500 cubic feet per second, but by the time the event started on Sunday the water had slowed to about 2,700 cfs.<\/p>\n<p>Hargrove said he didn\u2019t commit to one strategy or another. That was partially because of the river\u2019s flow constantly changing throughout the weekend, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was stoked to put down a good ride and get the win,\u201d Mason Hargrove said.<\/p>\n<p>This was the 20-year-old\u2019s second time competing in the River Days competition.
