(Olivia Sun, The Colorado Sun)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Olivia Sun, The Colorado Sun<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>On Monday, Aug. 7, Colorado Senate Bill 23-169, which raises the legal age to purchase a firearm to 21, will go into effect.<\/p>\n<p>The bill was sponsored by state Sens. Kyle Mullica, D-Thornton, and Jessie Danielson, D-Wheat Ridge, House Majority Leader Monica Duran, D-Wheat Ridge, and state Rep. Eliza Hamrick, D-Centennial, according to a news release from General Assembly Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>The bill was approved April 25 and signed by Gov. Jared Polis on April 28, according to a document from the Colorado General Assembly\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/sb23-169\" id=\"link-f5a5870635d4cd4e8e53b44b76215a75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-pdf-embed\"><iframe class=\"article-pdf\" src=\"https:\/\/dur-prod-public-pdfs.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/YKlF_8fPZBto9-BWZR-IR8HEEzo.pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:500px;border:1px solid #ddd\" loading=\"lazy\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dur-prod-public-pdfs.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/YKlF_8fPZBto9-BWZR-IR8HEEzo.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023a_169_signed.pdf (Download PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/iframe>\n<p class=\"naviga-pdf-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dur-prod-public-pdfs.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/YKlF_8fPZBto9-BWZR-IR8HEEzo.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023a_169_signed.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Currently, individuals 18 years and older may purchase and \u201cknowingly possess a firearm.\u201d After Aug. 7, that minimum age requirement will be 21 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Illegal possession of a firearm by someone under age 21 is a Class 2 misdemeanor on the first violation. After that, illegal possession is a Class 5 felony.<\/p>\n<p>The bill does have exceptions to the new age requirement. People under the age of 21 may possess a firearm for hunter\u2019s or firearm safety courses, authorized target shooting, hunting wildlife within the parameters of the law, and serving in the military or as a peace officer, among others. Individuals over the age of 18 by the enactment date are also allowed to possess firearms legally, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/sb23-169\" id=\"link-4a8515da0fe84f0fe0dc3b6994832c23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado General Assembly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new bill also states that it is a Class 4 felony to \u201crecklessly provide, or permit a juvenile to possess, a firearm,\u201d the Colorado General Assembly\u2019s website said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGun deaths in Colorado have been climbing higher and higher every year, and a disproportionate number of them are committed by younger Coloradans,\u201d Mullica said in the news release from General Assembly Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaising the age to purchase a firearm will keep more deadly weapons away from our youth, reduce youth suicide rates, and make our communities safer,\u201d Danielson stated in the same news release.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/everytownresearch.org\/rankings\/law\/minimum-age-to-purchase\/\" id=\"link-f3172702371d72b9a8e75de587a7f5df\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Everytown for Gun Safety\u2019s<\/a> website, 22 states have raised the minimum age for firearm purchase. The website also reports that firearms are the No. 1 cause of death in people ages 18 to 20. That age group commits \u201cgun homicides at triple the rate of adults 21 years and older,\u201d the website states.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in 2021, 1,064 firearm deaths occurred in Colorado. <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosun.com\/2023\/04\/06\/colorado-gun-violence-explained-charts\/\" id=\"link-e0ab6c192f8373ccc53b0ad6eddbc687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Colorado Sun<\/a> reported that gun deaths in Colorado were higher in 2021 than any other year since 1980.
