(Bureau of Land Management)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>A news release Friday announced that the Bureau of Land Management transferred a Type IV fire engine to the Cortez Fire Protection District as part of the BLM Rural Fire Readiness Program. The truck will go to Cortez Fire\u2019s Station 2, on County Road 24.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe BLM works closely with the Cortez Fire Protection District to suppress wildland fires that threaten communities, property, and natural resources,\u201d said BLM Fire Management Officer Brandon Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/programs\/public-safety-and-fire\/rural-fire-readiness-program\" id=\"link-ab77cef3a44a92be9909cf3868a97f7b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BLM\u2019s website<\/a>, the Rural Fire Readiness program aims to enhance firefighting capabilities for wildland firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program allows the BLM to provide training and equipment to our partners \u2013 at no cost to them \u2013 so we can continue to safely and efficiently suppress wildland fires together,\u201d the BLM\u2019s website states.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible wildland firefighting partners may receive training or equipment such as engines, water tenders, radios, hand tools, personal protective equipment and more. Fire departments must meet certain criteria to qualify for the program:<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-x-im-unordered-list\">They need to have a current fire response agreement with BLM.They must serve a rural area.Their responsibilities must include wildland fire protection.They must be in close proximity to BLM lands and respond to wildland fires on BLM lands when available and needed.<\/div>\n<p>Every year in Colorado, 5,618 wildfires scorch about 237,500 acres of land. Partnerships between local fire departments and BLM are necessary to respond to wildfires on private, state, and federal lands \u201cto protect grazing, recreation, wildlife, and other values important to local economies,\u201d the news release stated.<\/p>\n<p><em id=\"emphasis-60e6221e7aab639647fffb253e0f2044\">This article was republished Aug. 5 to correct a BLM error.
