{"id":32266,"date":"2023-08-12T20:53:58","date_gmt":"2023-08-13T02:53:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/bluejays-football-fired-up-for-new-season\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T01:55:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T07:55:09","slug":"bluejays-football-fired-up-for-new-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/bluejays-football-fired-up-for-new-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Bluejays football fired up for new season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=441067a8-7240-5874-818f-c75318fa837f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1280\" height=\"661\" alt=\"Coach Josh Gardner tells his team how proud he is of them after defeating Sanford and earning a place in the state playoff game.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Coach Josh Gardner tells his team how proud he is of them after defeating Sanford and earning a place in the state playoff game.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Sam Green\/Special to The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Many programs would love to have what the Bluejays have going.<\/p>\n<p>For Mancos, though, there\u2019s still plenty of unfinished business.<\/p>\n<p>After playing in the eight-man state title game in 2021, then following it up with a semifinal appearance in 2022, the Bluejays know that the sky\u2019s the limit for the program heading into the upcoming fall.<\/p>\n<p>Mancos collected their fourth nine-plus victory season in a row, accounting for each of the past full season slates dating back to 2018 \u2013 head coach Josh Gardner\u2019s first year at the controls for the Bluejay program.<\/p>\n<p>During the hot summer months, the Bluejays know that their preparation is for getting prepared for the big games this fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a huge turnout in the weight room this summer,\u201d said Gardner of his team\u2019s ambition heading into the season. \u201cOur defensive coordinator Jarrod Wyatt has taken our strength program to the next level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the Jays were hit by graduation like many of the other area programs, Gardner is optimistic about the up-and-coming leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur seniors are really talented \u2013 they\u2019ve got a ton of experience,\u201d added Gardner of the Class of 2024 leaders on the team. Among them, Kail Wayman \u2013 a four-year starter \u2013 who will shift from running back to quarterback for the Bluejays this year.<\/p>\n<p>Wayman ran for more than 1,000 yards last year, and looks to offer a dual threat at the position. \u201cKail is very dynamic,\u201d said Gardner, \u201cand we like how elusive and agile he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wayman and a number of talented running backs, including 2022 breakout rusher Levi Martin, will look to find space behind the blocking of an experienced front line. Sophomore Colten Vannest fills in at center, while classmate Adam Martinez looks to continue to build off a strong freshman season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur lines take a lot of pride in their technique,\u201d said Gardner of his offensive and defensive fronts, \u201cand the kids have a lot of wisdom about how to work together as a unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=5f417173-c817-52a3-8004-91347913880f&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2806\" alt=\"Mancos teacher and coach Josh Gardner gives the graduation speech May 21 in Mancos. Sam Green\/Special to The Journal<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Sam Green\/Special to The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Senior Elliot Sam anchors the defensive line for the Bluejays, joining an athletic secondary led by classmate Andrew Jaime, who finished second on the team in tackles a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur defense has a ton of experience, and I hope we build on that and get better,\u201d added Gardner.<\/p>\n<p>Mancos opens the season on Friday, Aug. 25 with a home game against Melrose (New Mexico) at 4 p.m. on a neutral field in Chama, New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The following weekend, the Bluejays take on Monticello on the road, before facing back-to-back neutral site contests against northeast Colorado powers Merino (Sept. 9) and Haxtun (Sept. 16).<\/p>\n<p>A showdown against Dove Creek awaits on the first Friday in October, as the Bluejays and Bulldogs renew a fantastic back-and-forth rivalry that will likely go a long way in deciding a league champion.
