The ballot measures cover realigning Rico\u2019s schoolchildren to secure a spot in Telluride schools instead of the Dolores County School District, which is based in Dove Creek, near the Utah state line.<\/p>\n<p>Since Rico\u2019s public school closed in 2018, the majority of the town\u2019s 25 school-age children have attended Telluride schools, which is 28 miles away, as previously mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-journal.com\/articles\/rico-school-realignment-meeting-set-next-week\/\" id=\"link-0e56e676be2b2d52668b0795808a9e1f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em id=\"emphasis-8c667114bf2a52f570affb9dfa6f46c3\">The Journal<\/em><\/a>. YRSK will detach Rico\u2019s students from attending school in Dove Creek, which is a 75 mile commute.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands now, Rico\u2019s school kids can only attend Telluride schools under the premise that the district \u201cchoices\u201d the students into their classrooms, in other words only if they have space for them, which is not guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>Voters who support the realignment make certain Rico\u2019s school children will be annexed in the Telluride School District.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=9d09030d-d931-55f1-8f5b-da714da7f7e0&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"501\" height=\"787\" alt=\"Ballot measure, Yes for Rico\u2019s School Kids, will be voted upon during this November\u2019s election. Courtesy from Yes for Rico\u2019s School Kids.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>YRSK\u2019s registered agent, Madeline Tanguay, said that the realignment will not increase taxes for anyone involved and that Rico would continue to pay for the 2022 Dolores County School\u2019s bond.<\/p>\n<p>She also said that this proposal has been in the works for more than a year and both Telluride and Dolores County school boards support the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ballot measure has nothing to do with county lines,\u201d she said in an email. \u201cIt will only realign the school district boundaries so that Rico kids will be guaranteed a spot in Telluride school.
