Bode Miller, the famed alpine ski racer, will screen his documentary on the mental health crises unfolding in Rocky Mountain ski towns in Durango on Wednesday, followed by a panel discussion of related resources Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Paradise Paradox,\u201d of which Miller was the executive producer, explores why and how mental health problems can come to a head in communities built around exciting, hedonistic activities such as skiing and snowboarding.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople want to be stoked,\u201d Miller said in an interview with The Durango Herald<\/em>. \u201c \u2026 They don\u2019t want to be the Debbie downer, they want to be the upper.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brett Rapkin, one of the film\u2019s producers, is the filmmaker behind \u201cThe Weight of Gold,\u201d a documentary on the depression many Olympic athletes experience.<\/p>\n

Miller was a part of that documentary as well. But unlike \u201cThe Weight of Gold,\u201d \u201cThe Paradise Paradox\u201d moves the focus away from just elite athletes.<\/p>\n

The conversation started around fame, he said, but this film was about making \u201csomething everyone relates to, regardless of your station in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Durango <\/a>and neighboring communities are no exception to the trend that prompted National Geographic <\/a>to name Colorado and adjacent ski states \u201cthe suicide belt.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado<\/a>, which is hosting the events, and Miller hope the film will open a dialogue on the issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want people to just watch it and leave \u2013 it\u2019s not \u2018The Avengers,\u2019\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n

The events are a part of the Foundation\u2019s \u201cMaking A Difference\u201d speaker series. On Thursday morning, Miller will facilitate a panel featuring speakers with expertise in local resources.<\/p>\n

Panelists will include Durango Police Chief Bob Brammer, Director of SOS Outreach and The Hive Kelsie Borland, Behavioral Health Promotion Program Manager at San Juan Basin Public Health Katheryn Maloney, Mercy Hospital CEO Brandon Mencini and Axis Director of Crisis Services Molly Rodriguez.<\/p>\n

The film screening will take place Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, followed by a Q&A.<\/p>\n

Tickets can be purchased in advance at durangoconcerts.com<\/a>. The panel will take place from 9-11 a.m. at TBK Bank\u2019s Community Room, and tickets must be purchased in advance at swcommunityfoundation.org\/bode<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Another screening and panel will take place in Pagosa Springs Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n
