{"id":31023,"date":"2023-10-07T02:20:11","date_gmt":"2023-10-07T08:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/montezuma-cortez-school-board-to-host-a-meet-the-candidates-night-on-oct-9\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T01:32:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T07:32:45","slug":"montezuma-cortez-school-board-to-host-a-meet-the-candidates-night-on-oct-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/montezuma-cortez-school-board-to-host-a-meet-the-candidates-night-on-oct-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Montezuma-Cortez school board to host a \u2018meet the candidates\u2019 night on Oct. 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=456c537b-5711-598c-8921-76624756e7c5&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1299\" alt=\"New Montezuma-Cortez RE-1 board members were sworn in Tuesday evening.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">New Montezuma-Cortez RE-1 board members were sworn in Tuesday evening.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1 Press Release<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1 will host a \u201cmeet the candidates\u201d night on Monday, Oct. 9, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Cortez, giving voters  a chance to learn more about the candidates and where they stand on issues.<\/p>\n<p>Refreshments will be provided.<\/p>\n<p>Board members who are vacating seats are Cody Wells, Lyndreth Wall, Sherri Wright and Layne Frazier.<\/p>\n<p>Board President Sheri Noyes, Jeanette Hart and Ed Rice are in the middle of four-year terms, but plan to be present at the meet-and-greet along with the candidates.<\/p>\n<p>The candidate for District A, held by Wells, is Rafe O\u2019Brien. The contender for District D, the only two-year seat and currently held by Wall, is Leland Collins.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan James \u201cJJ\u201d Lewis and Rhonda Tracy are both vying for Wright\u2019s District C seat, and Mike Lynch is running for Frazier\u2019s seat in District G.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\"><strong>Rafe O\u2019Brien<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Rafe O\u2019Brien has children who attend the school district and said, \u201cI want to give back to the schools and have my voice heard, for my children and other families.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\"><strong>Jonathan James \u201cJJ\u201d Lewis<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Lewis, a United States Public Health Service Committee Corps veteran who served with the Navy, recently<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-journal.com\/articles\/cortez-school-board-faces-criticism-about-leadership-low-pay-and-low-performance\/\" id=\"link-7cc88f84c0af27c273fe97a2a564cc4c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> spoke<\/a> out about staff retention and other issues within the district at a board meeting, will be running against Tracy for the District C seat which is currently held by Sherri Wright.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis is an adventure therapist and psychotherapist with experience serving on boards. He is the current board secretary of the Motorcycle Relief Project and was vice president of The GS Giants, both of which are motorcycle groups.<\/p>\n<p>He also co-directed a nonprofit called \u201cLost for a Reason,\u201d which serves Navajo children and families on the Navajo Reservation and helped open one \u201cof the largest domestic violence shelters\u201d in Northern Arizona and the Navajo Reservation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\"><strong>Rhonda Tracy<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Tracy is an Air Force veteran and retired U.S. history teacher who currently works as a self-employed bookkeeper and caregiver for her disabled sister.
