Sgt. Michael Moran will be laid to rest Wednesday. His life will be celebrated at a private memorial service 10 a.m. at the Cortez Recreation Center.<\/p>\n

Moran was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop last week in southwest Cortez \u2013 a tragedy that sent shock waves through the community.<\/p>\n

The suspect, who has been identified as Jason Campbell, 44, of Ogden, Utah, was located and killed by law enforcement \u201cwithin a matter of minutes\u201d of the roadside shooting, Sheriff Nowlin said.<\/p>\n

Police have released few details about the shooting.<\/p>\n

Sgt. Moran, 46, a former K-9 handler, joined the Cortez Police Department in 2012. Prior to that, he served as a Marine and completed two tours in Iraq. He had two daughters.<\/p>\n

The service is open to emergency response personnel and by invitation only, according to a news release from the city of Cortez.<\/p>\n

A procession of first responder vehicles will begin about 8:20 a.m. on Main Street, which will be closed from Elm Street east to Sligo Street from about 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cMembers of the public who wish to show their support of Sgt. Moran or view the procession are asked to stay on the sidewalk on Main Street between Chestnut and Harrison streets,\u201d said public information officer Kelly Codner.<\/p>\n

Road closures<\/div>\n

Main Street: Closed in both directions between Elm Street and Sligo Street, 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m.<\/p>\n

Westbound Seventh Street between L Way and Sligo Street: 6:45 a.m. to 8 a.m.<\/p>\n

Mildred Road between Empire Street and Montezuma Avenue: 8:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.<\/p>\n

Roger Smith Avenue between Empire Street and Montezuma Avenue: 6:45 a.m. to noon.<\/p>\n

All roads around the Cortez Recreation Center will be closed until after the service ends at noon, Codner said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
