{"id":30036,"date":"2023-12-24T23:18:04","date_gmt":"2023-12-25T06:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/swos-board-celebrates-attendance-at-the-end-of-the-semester\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T01:09:40","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T07:09:40","slug":"swos-board-celebrates-attendance-at-the-end-of-the-semester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/swos-board-celebrates-attendance-at-the-end-of-the-semester\/","title":{"rendered":"SWOS board celebrates  attendance at the end of the semester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=50a6b463-ec30-41e6-afef-40d52a789019&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1980\" height=\"1352\" alt=\"Southwest Open School closed and canceled classes on Thursday.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Southwest Open School closed and canceled classes on Thursday.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>At their December board meeting on Monday, the Southwest Open School board heard about their recent audit, celebrated attendance and made plans for board training in the new year.<\/p>\n<p>The board was updated on grants to be used for career pathway development, and SWOS plans to continue looking for ways to improve education.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Majors of the Cortez accounting firm Majors and Haley P.C., provided information about the school\u2019s audit, which was completed June 30.<\/p>\n<p>In the revenue section of the 52-page audit, Majors showed that the school\u2019s revenue had fallen $213,603 \u2013 from $2,268,513 the previous school year to the current $2,054,910.<\/p>\n<p>The audit also showed that SWOS incurred $1,968,878 in expenses, up $425,547 from a total of $1,543,331 in expenses the prior year.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the rise in expenses, the general fund is down 15.8%.<\/p>\n<p>After the audit, SWOS Director Casey Simpson shared news on the school\u2019s attendance rate, currently at 87.6%. That is more than 2 percentage points below the Montezuma-Cortez attendance rate, which ranges from 89.7% to about 90% across their schools.<\/p>\n<p>Those who haven\u2019t been counted in SWOS\u2019 number of absent students have a \u201cverifiable excuse,\u201d according to Simpson.<\/p>\n<p>Before moving onto information about the school\u2019s upcoming board training, Simpson updated the board on two grants that the school had recently applied for, one of which that will help them maintain their academic interventionist.<\/p>\n<p>Before breaking for executive session to perform the director self-evaluation, the board discussed board training scheduled for Feb. 13.<\/p>\n<p>The board school plans to hold the training at the Cortez Chamber of Commerce.
