BEVERLY HILLS, California \u2013 When Lily Gladstone took the stage Sunday night<\/a> to accept her first Golden Globe, she spoke to the live TV audience<\/a> in the Blackfeet language.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a historic win,\u201d she said, becoming the Globes\u2019 first Indigenous winner of best actress in a drama. \u201cThis is for every little rez kid, every little urban kid, every little Native kid out there who has a dream, who is seeing themselves represented and our stories told \u2013 by ourselves, in our own words \u2013 with tremendous allies and tremendous trust from and with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gladstone, 37, won for her role as Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese\u2019s epic \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon.\u201d<\/a> In the film, her character\u2019s family was murdered in a reign of terror in which the Osage were targeted for the headrights to their oil-rich land in Oklahoma.<\/p>\n

In the audience, co-star Leonardo DiCaprio wore a pin in solidarity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have my Osage pin on tonight because, you know, the Osage nation, we\u2019re standing in unison with them for this movie,\u201d he said before the show.<\/p>\n

Gladstone and DiCaprio walked the red carpet with their respective mothers. After her win backstage, she paid homage to her parents for supporting her dreams.<\/p>\n

The actor said her father watched from home, where they will have a \u201cbig ol\u2019 feast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time I\u2019ve felt a level of guilt or it wasn\u2019t really possible, my mom and my dad my whole life never once questioned that this is what I was meant to do,\u201d said Gladstone, who is an only child. \u201cThey would always support me when it was the times of famine and the times of feast.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s \u201ca beautiful community, nation, that encouraged me to keep going, keep doing this,\u201d Gladstone said of the Blackfeet Nation. \u201cI\u2019m here with my mom, who, even though she\u2019s not Blackfeet, worked tirelessly to get our language into our classrooms so I had a Blackfeet-language teacher growing up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor, who grew up between Seattle and the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, was named one of 2023\u2019s AP Breakthrough Entertainers.<\/a><\/p>\n

Gladstone said she typically greets people in her Blackfeet language.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s often how I introduce myself in a new group of people, especially when it\u2019s significant,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was one of the more natural things I could do in the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the subject of a possible Oscar win, Gladstone told The Associated Press:<\/a> \u201cIt would be an incredible moment in my life, but it would mean so much more than just me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is, of course, something I have to think about, insofar as I would just really love to speak some of my language \u2013 and teach myself a little bit more of my language \u2013 to have and to hold in that moment,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Gladstone is the second Native actress to receive a nomination at the Globes after Irene Bedard, who received a nod for the 1995 television movie \u201cLakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have words,\u201d Gladstone said. \u201cI\u2019m so grateful that I can speak even a little bit of my language, which I\u2019m not fluent in, up here, because in this business, Native actors used to speak their lines in English, and then the sound mixers would run them backwards to accomplish Native languages on camera.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking of the award, Gladstone said: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t belong to just me. I\u2019m holding it right now. I\u2019m holding it with all my beautiful sisters in the film.\u201d<\/p>\n
