McGee Park will host an evening of motocross racing on Feb. 17 when the Law Tigers Arenacross and Freestyle Motocross comes to Farmington.<\/p>\n

Gates open at 5 p.m., and tickets are available at the Fun Center stores in Farmington, Durango and Cortez.<\/p>\n

Organizer Andrew Gallegos, owner of Aztec Motocross<\/a>, expects the event again will draw about 260 participants ages 2 to more than 50.<\/p>\n

Gallegos said his team includes a \u201clot of family and friends. \u2026 \u201dI delegate, kind of let people do their thing, and be in charge of certain things and I oversee the whole thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kicker Arenacross, which held events until 2019, previously promoted events in Farmington. Gallegos plans to hold an annual arenacross competition on Presidents Day weekend.<\/p>\n

Gallegos said their two title sponsors, Law Tigers and Fun Center, are joined by 21 other local sponsors.<\/p>\n

The arena track is built by local pro Zack Gurley with IRMX La Plata<\/a>, using dirt in the arena, Gallegos said.<\/p>\n

Gallegos said mostly Western motocross riders will compete for $6,500 in the pro class. He said cash prizes are awarded to the top five finishers in two classes.<\/p>\n

The youngest riders will compete in the stacyc (electric strider bike) with classes up to age 40 and above. A lunchbox league will be held for youngsters who raced at Hart Canyon this summer, Gallegos said.<\/p>\n

Gallegos said a freestyle act from Montana called 406 FMX will provide trick riding with backflips and more during halftime. Music will be provided by Valencia DJ.<\/p>\n

Given the inherent danger of the sport, Gallegos said they work closely with their insurance provider. Each participant must sign a waiver.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got policies and protocols we\u2019ve got to follow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Gallegos said three EMS technicians from San Juan County Fire and Rescue will be on hand, and organizers will check every rider\u2019s gear and helmets before they get on the track.<\/p>\n

No spectators are allowed on the track. Only one pit person may accompany a rider to the starting gate.<\/p>\n

Registration and a track walk begin at 7:30 a.m., with a riders meeting at 9 a.m. Practice lap follow the meeting, and heat races begin at noon.<\/p>\n
