(Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Ballantine Communications Inc., which owns <em id=\"emphasis-83b4f926f5a4915a8afb52bf5feba084\">The Durango Herald<\/em> and <em id=\"emphasis-16a1178f4a54c31903244d4ad81f77b2\">The Journal<\/em> in Southwest Colorado, announced Thursday that it has reached an agreement with Gannett Co. Inc. to purchase the <em id=\"emphasis-002a7682c6f7383fef45648e56ac2a4f\">Farmington Daily Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>BCI also owns the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tricityrecordnm.com\/\" id=\"link-ac5cda42112d66d0ff0e8d10c3b0b8ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em id=\"emphasis-e55cc2d87f44f11e61a91cccefbd16dd\">Tri-City Record<\/em><\/a> in Farmington. The company said it plans to merge the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daily-times.com\/\" id=\"link-41c55bd93131722fcfa3e946cf0fa274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em id=\"emphasis-d44e2b96a451f175c1579c2bb0d1699b\">Farmington Daily Times<\/em><\/a> with the <em id=\"emphasis-cf292fbd928fa4ee8e5594bb33a36949\">Tri-City Record<\/em> effective June 1 to strengthen local news coverage across San Juan County, New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=33fb40de-ee22-54e4-ab9c-cb7111298939&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"975\" height=\"1492\" alt=\"Blais\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Blais<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cWe look forward to welcoming the <em id=\"emphasis-b0f407157b5f989e16ea778d3884aa90\">Farmington Daily Times<\/em>\u2019 readers and winning them over with our commitment to credible and comprehensive local reporting,\u201d said John Blais, CEO and publisher for BCI, in a letter to employees announcing the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Anastasi, Gannett\u2019s vice president of local news, said the company strives to make business decisions that best serve, empower and enrich communities across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful for the support of our readers and advertisers throughout the years and thank our employees for their dedication and hard work,\u201d Anastasi said in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n<p>The <em id=\"emphasis-e231c86fa07c440976e56abfd5042205\">Daily Times<\/em> began in 1890 as the <em id=\"emphasis-9b902c0fa326b435c5a5f33029468dcf\">Junction City Times<\/em>. Since then, it has merged and changed ownership several times. It has also undergone several name changes, including <em id=\"emphasis-442f467c12e5cae870026ae9ec740b6f\">Farmington Times<\/em>, <em id=\"emphasis-9900edd78c6aab4ba018f98e004e75f7\">Farmington Hustler<\/em> and <em id=\"emphasis-0775b7ffbf02fea078e162769e6d554e\">Farmington Times-Hustler<\/em>. It became the <em id=\"emphasis-f30525bfa9490255c03f15c0104f7b35\">Farmington Daily Times<\/em> around the 1950s when it began publishing daily. Gannett Co. Inc. purchased the paper in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>With the merger, the <em id=\"emphasis-4b72999ce2cd84241d8ffaad5c58e858\">Daily Times<\/em> will continue under the <em id=\"emphasis-19be7ee1e0dd97257c5c74be6eeb801e\">Tri-City Record<\/em> banner.<\/p>\n<p>BCI launched the <em id=\"emphasis-1e565f6d64abe917612cf401833ebf11\">Tri-City Record<\/em> in May 2023 in an effort to better serve northwest New Mexico with timely, local news reporting. The newspaper publishes three days a week \u2013 Monday, Wednesday and Friday \u2013 and covers topics such as water, education, sports, public safety, and city and county governments. It serves Farmington, Aztec, Bloomfield, Kirtland and Shiprock and other communities on the Navajo Nation.<\/p>\n<p>The <em id=\"emphasis-c1ae8ee6c1a66015bbdbfc4a0e21483a\">Tri-City Record<\/em> has an office on Main Street in downtown Farmington, and its news staff members are local to those communities. BCI Senior Editor Trent Stephens of Cortez oversees newsroom operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plucky startup has also benefited greatly from the administrative and marketing support from employees at Ballantine Communications headquarters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durangoherald.com\/\" id=\"link-f21f96e7f7269eaa9c208d165536ffdd\" target=\"_blank\"><em id=\"emphasis-0375a7d155d314aa87257ce621df706d\">The Durango Herald<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-journal.com\/\" id=\"link-68fc83530ffb7b65a4b3f5ffcacf7fc2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em id=\"emphasis-58b8dc77b06a0ddb7638e29e3d1e1f66\">The Journal<\/em><\/a>,\u201d Blais wrote in his letter to employees.<\/p>\n<p>The family-owned BCI media company is expanding during a time when most media markets are contracting, especially in local markets. The number of newspaper closures accelerated to 2\u00bd per week in 2023, leaving more than half of all counties in the United States with limited access to reliable local news \u2013 sometimes called \u201cnews deserts,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medill.northwestern.edu\/news\/2023\/more-than-half-of-us-counties-have-no-access-or-very-limited-access-to-local-news.html\" id=\"link-e81aca8397b9bbc28421dee62fee45d5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a report<\/a> from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.<\/p>\n<p>The move to expand shows the company\u2019s commitment to the Four Corners and serving its communities and businesses with relevant, local content, Blais said.<\/p>\n<p>BCI Board Chairman Richard G. Ballantine said northwest New Mexico and Southwest Colorado share a number of similar issues, including cultural and economic, and the family communications company \u201clooks forward to reporting on them in even more breadth and depth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=12bc7b19-5d82-4984-827a-94450719e901&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"600\" height=\"801\" alt=\"Ballantine\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Ballantine<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a broad region with a myriad of significant attractions that are worth sharing,\u201d Ballantine said. \u201cThe <em id=\"emphasis-b63ee4325765b38e59fb755f3ce67deb\">Daily Times<\/em> provides an expanded foundation for that writing and opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move will consolidate the two newspapers\u2019 audiences in Farmington and San Juan County, and add to BCI\u2019s larger audience in Southwest Colorado. The <em id=\"emphasis-ea014ab5fe1da3caf8728f9448f83142\">Herald<\/em>, <em id=\"emphasis-8657441d45d93e3de46f2efb05b6e7e3\">Journal <\/em>and <em id=\"emphasis-7c27665d1e7988706a6f01e3048f08f4\">Tri-City Record<\/em> have a combined online reach of more than 400,000 unique visitors per month and more than 3.7 million engagements.<\/p>\n<p>BCI has published a phone directory in San Juan County since 1984 and has had an active news bureau in Farmington since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>While the name of the <em id=\"emphasis-93c4a08eaea59b2a40754afd6dd5d641\">Farmington Daily Times<\/em> will change to <em id=\"emphasis-64e3e89b87798c06e6e9bf16fb5f211b\">Tri-City Record<\/em>, it will remain the paper of record in San Juan County under the <em id=\"emphasis-ef1c66e9773ef08aa4857c79b21ebceb\">Tri-City Record<\/em> banner. News, features and advertising from both papers will be merged into one publication.<\/p>\n<p>The six-day frequency of the <em id=\"emphasis-c89d4ae4cc83768aad45c3fe96a6abbc\">Farmington Daily Times<\/em> will conform to the three-day frequency of the <em id=\"emphasis-27fddbce52f15d0643665cefb3327716\">Tri-City Record<\/em>.
