(Ben Bradley\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>MANCOS \u2013 One doesn\u2019t become the Grand Champion Round Robin winner of the Montezuma County Fair without incredible dedication and passion for her craft.<\/p>\n<p>Mancos senior Akima Kane takes that same level of commitment toward her secondary passion \u2013 competing in the shot put and discus events for the Bluejay track and field team \u2013 and is enjoying similarly resounding success.<\/p>\n<p>Kane\u2019s personal best of 27 feet, 1 inch at the Bluejays\u2019 home meet resulted in her second shot put title this season, coupling with her runner-up toss in the San Juan Basin League championships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it fun just to see how far I can throw. My form has improved, but there are still things I\u2019m working on,\u201d Kane said.<\/p>\n<p>Kane built her own pedigree for success in a completely different discipline \u2013 competing in livestock events \u2013 and carried her hard work and strength into the ring for the Bluejays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarrying animal feed at home, it\u2019s strength-training for me,\u201d Kane said. \u201cI love taking care of my animals, so the little things like hauling water, breaking ice, all that stuff helps me to feel strong, and it gives me motivation to throw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=3385a613-4133-51bb-bb35-246d476ad7a5&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"616\" height=\"784\" alt=\"Mancos senior Akima Kane has enjoyed success in the throwing rings and the 4H judging arenas in her career at Mancos. (Photo courtesy of Anna Jane Photography)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Working primarily in poultry and with rabbits, Kane won the Grand Champion title for Breeding in the 2023 Montezuma County Fair to join her Round Robin crown. Kane, who will study wildlife biology at Western Colorado University this fall, looks to carry her love for animals into her future endeavors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 4H has always been in my family, and I\u2019ve enjoyed connecting with the other people involved with it, and that\u2019s carried over to track and field, too,\u201d Kane said. \u201cI love encouraging my teammates and the way that they support me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That approach also carried over to her duties as a manager for the Mancos girls basketball team during its 2A state tournament run. Now, her teammates lean on her for the big points she\u2019s provided as part of the Bluejays run to their third straight SJBL team title.
