(Curtis Ray Benally\/Turkeyboy Photography)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Curtis Ray Benally<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>SHIPROCK \u2013 With nearly 1,000 spectators lining the road nearing the finish line in Shiprock, multiple runners from the Four Corners region shined among competitors from all across the country at the 41st Shiprock Marathon on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Fruitland resident Timberlin Henderson crossed the wire ahead of his rivals to win the men\u2019s marathon with a time of two hours, 44 minutes and 22 seconds, more than three minutes ahead of Farmington\u2019s Ryan Haebe, with Hector Ibarra of San Luis Potos\u00ed, Mexico checking in at third.<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s marathon, veteran runners Christina Marin and Bobbi Baur were the top two finishers. Marin, who\u2019s from Norwood, Massachusetts, crossed the finish line with a time of 3:36:03. Baur, a Chicago resident, checked in just over 2\u00bd minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Aztec resident Karen Krob, 42, finished third in the women\u2019s marathon in 3:41:37.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson enjoys the Shiprock Marathon because of the unique perspective it presents for not only for runners, but for visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo many marathons around the country, you\u2019re surrounded by buildings and out here, you\u2019re running over a lot of open land,\u201d Henderson said. \u201cYou have aid stations every mile and they take care of their runners which makes it very special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Marin and Baur have participated in multiple marathons across the country. The Shiprock Marathon makes New Mexico the 45th state in which Marin has raced a marathon, leaving only Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and West Virginia as the only states left on her agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing up from sea level in Boston to this environment, the elevation and the heat really got to me here,\u201d Marin said. \u201cThe scenery and the breeze was the best way to focus and just to keep the race in front of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=8e50515d-f7cc-5083-9c8c-ec1e9fb066b6&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Christina Marin of Norwood, Massachusetts, won the women\u2019s full marathon with an official time of 3:36:03.29 at the Shiprock Marathon on Saturday. (Curtis Ray Benally\/Turkeyboy Photography)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Curtis Ray Benally<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Angela White of Tuba City, Arizona, won the women\u2019s half-marathon, completing the course in a time of 1:41:42.<\/p>\n<p>The 40-year-old had been competing in primarily shorter races in Arizona, but was eager to test her skills on the slightly tricky course which features a gradual uphill climb early followed by a slightly flatter, downhill descent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually like the course, because I can get into my pace going uphill and feel like I\u2019m going faster,\u201d White said. \u201cIt makes me feel like I\u2019m going faster in the second half of the race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White finished just 2\u00bd minutes ahead of Farmington\u2019s Laila Charley, a 2022 Navajo Prep graduate and 2021 recipient of the New Mexico Activities Association\u2019s Spirit of Sport Award.<\/p>\n<p>The award recognizes people who exemplify the ideals of the spirit of sport and represent the core mission of education-based athletics.<\/p>\n<p>Charley, who was a four-year starter for the Navajo Prep girls basketball team, suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of a near-fatal accident on July 15, 2020, which left her with fractured bones in her head.<\/p>\n<p>After returning home from a three-month hospital stay at the University of New Mexico, Charley was determined to play sports again and eventually found her way back onto the basketball and volleyball courts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-scoreboard\">\n<p>Shiprock Half Marathon Men\u2019s Top FivePlaceName\/AgeCityFinal Time1Tanner Dugi\/19Page, Ariz.1:19:482Timothy King\/19Fruitland, NM1:28:493Herbert Beyale\/30Shiprock, NM1:29:294Dylan Sinclair\/40Kayenta, Ariz.1:30:285Joshua Begay\/27Chinle, Ariz.1:34:27<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"naviga-scoreboard\">\n<p>Shiprock Half Marathon Women\u2019s Top FivePlaceName\/AgeCityFinal Time1Angela White\/40Tuba City, Ariz.1:41:422Laila Charley\/20Farmington, NM1:44:133Lori Todacheene\/48Centennial, Colo.1:45:494Johana Billy\/42Rio Rancho, NM1:48:005Rebecca Thomas\/18Albuquerque, NM1:48:06<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Currently attending Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, Charley was thrilled to represent not just her family, but the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe race means a lot to me because I\u2019ve been training a lot since I got back from college, and it\u2019s been a good motivator for me,\u201d Charley said. \u201cTo finish second in this race is something I\u2019m very proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Henderson and many other athletes from the region, long distance running is not only a preferred method to stay fit, but it also represents the area\u2019s culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinning this race for me means a lot for people in the community who spend so much of their training time with running and who are very passionate about it,\u201d said the 27-year-old Henderson. \u201cIt was good to demonstrate that today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Shiprock Marathon, which was held for the first time in the early 1980s, has gained national recognition, ranked third by USA Today among the nation\u2019s best marathons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been such a great turnout this year, and we couldn\u2019t be more pleased with the reception we\u2019ve gotten across the board,\u201d said race director Tom Higgenbagh.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b70aca6b-0aea-5c2d-a330-708eec76582e&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Tanner Dugi of Page, Arizona, comes to the finish line in first place in the men's category with the official time of 1:19:48.57 in the half-marathon race at the Shiprock Marathon on Saturday. (Curtis Ray Benally\/Turkeyboy Photography)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Curtis Ray Benally<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>This is the third consecutive year in which the race was held live after a temporary hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
