{"id":27408,"date":"2024-05-31T19:45:06","date_gmt":"2024-06-01T01:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/community-emergency-response-training-to-take-place-in-montezuma-county\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T23:59:31","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T05:59:31","slug":"community-emergency-response-training-to-take-place-in-montezuma-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/community-emergency-response-training-to-take-place-in-montezuma-county\/","title":{"rendered":"Community emergency response training to take place in Montezuma County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=7a2ebcbc-027f-4d7b-bd92-23accb3a10d5&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1135\" alt=\"Heart Safe La Plata will offer Basic First Aid training and CPR training in October.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Heart Safe La Plata will offer Basic First Aid training and CPR training in October.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Associated Press file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Community Emergency Response Team, with the support of the Montezuma and Dolores county Offices of Emergency Management, will host a meeting at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds to help recruit members.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 13, from 6-8 p.m. at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds, 30100 U.S. Highway 160 east of Cortez.<\/p>\n<p>People who are interested in joining the team will be trained to aid others in the community in the case of a natural disaster or emergency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are the help until help arrives,\u201d the team said in a prepared statement.<\/p>\n<p>According to information from county public information officer Vicki Schaffer, the Community Emergency Response Team, is a \u201cvital program aimed at empowering individuals to make their communities safer and more resilient during emergencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CERT team emphasized the importance of emergency preparedness training, especially living in a rural area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving in a rural area, we know that emergency response can be limited or may take more than a few minutes to arrive. When disaster strikes, do you have the skills and knowledge to help yourself or your neighbors until help arrives?\u201d they asked.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers who join the team will be part of \u201cbasic\u201d emergency response training from experienced, local first responders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll practice skills during training drills and exercises, and learn how to advocate for neighborhood preparedness,\u201d organizers said.<\/p>\n<p>All the training is free, and some of the emergency supplies are included.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety and doing the greatest good for the greatest number,\u201d the CERT team said. \u201cCERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where community members will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference. Through training, team members can manage utilities and put out small fires, provide basic medical aid, search for and rescue victims safely, support emergency management and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective. The CERT course will benefit anyone who takes it.
