(Courtesy Photo)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Photo<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>FARMINGTON \u2013 A slew of former champions have joined the lineup for Thursday\u2019s opening round of the 60th annual San Juan Open, which will feature nearly 40 professional golfers at the San Juan Country Club.<\/p>\n<p>Led by defending champion Josh Anderson, as well as former champions Jesse Mueller, Benoit Beisser and Sam Saunders, the San Juan Open features a purse of more than $40,000 with the winner taking home a $15,000 check for.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the list of celebrated golfers taking part in the four-day tournament, there is an amateur tournament and a pro-am tournament highlighting the event.<\/p>\n<p>David Crafton, general manager of San Juan Country Club, feels the tournament is coming up at the perfect time of year, with many sports fans already tuning into the recently completed U.S. Open in Pinehurst, North Carolina, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durangoherald.com\/articles\/photos-navajo-trail-open-golf-tournament-features-tough-round-2-competition\/\" id=\"link-638bda51de83b9f788e2706e7fbf4ea6\" target=\"_blank\">Navajo Trail Open<\/a>, which was held last weekend at Hillcrest Golf Course in Durango.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a nice swing for players in this area,\u201d Crafton said. \u201cI think it\u2019s good to keep the historical tradition of having this event immediately after the U.S. Open and it\u2019s a great opportunity for the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Proceeds from the event will go to several charities, including New Beginnings and the First Tee Four Corners programs. Both organizations work with children and families in the region.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=61403d03-5248-5d29-850e-c636fa0357b6&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Josh Anderson is seen here holding the trophy after winning the 2019 California State Open at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, California. (Courtesy Photo)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy Photo<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cBoth of those entities help kids in the community to be better citizens,\u201d Crafton said. \u201cWe\u2019ve already seen kids who have gone from one organization to the next and have benefited in many way by the work they do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anderson, a veteran professional golfer from Murrieta, California, also earned wins last year in the Nevada Open Golf Championship, which was held at the Palms and Casablanca golf courses in Mesquite. Anderson currently resides in Goodyear, Arizona and played collegiate golf at Pepperdine University.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson\u2019s biggest career victories include the 2019 California State Open Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta.
