(Courtesy of Jeff Johnson)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>A rock slide created a mess for the Durango &amp; Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, altering weekend services.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Johnson, vice president and general manager with D&amp;SNG, said the railroad\u2019s daily patrol crew encountered the rock slide north of Needleton, adding it was severe enough to where railroad officials will not be able to transport passengers further than Cascade Canyon through at least Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(The rock slide) has every appearance of being weather-related,\u201d he said, adding the recent rainfall was a factor.<\/p>\n<p>The rock slide happened near mile post 486 just outside Needleton, which is about 55 minutes south of Silverton by train.<\/p>\n<p>The slide is believed to have occurred either Friday night or the early hours of Saturday morning, and railroad officials were notified about the rock slide just after 7:30 a.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis location is entirely remote in a separate canyon from the highway,\u201d Johnson said, adding it\u2019s over a mile away from U.S. Highway 550.<\/p>\n<p>No roads were impacted, and there\u2019s no evidence that the rock slide crossed into the nearby creeks or the Animas River, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The last train that made its way back to Durango before the slide was around 4 p.m. Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Trains heading up to Cascade Canyon will turn back around to Durango rather than go the rest of the route to Silverton on Sunday, Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to be communicating with all of our passengers one-on-one, individually for those who have already booked,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Most passengers on Saturday opted to keep their reservations and go up to Cascade Canyon rather than ask for a refund, Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>Once the officials clear the tracks of rubble, they will determine whether there was any possible damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s highly likely that we\u2019re going to have some track damage to repair,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>If any tracks need to be replaced, he said that process could take a whole day, if not longer.<\/p>\n<p><em id=\"emphasis-0adf3a7ba30c92d14a8b7f0295dad4ca\"><a href=\"mailto:mhollinshead@durangoherald.com\">mhollinshead@durangoherald.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Officials believe it was weather-related; Saturday and Sunday trains won\u2019t go past Cascade Canyon<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":26622,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[3033,170,28,414],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-27023","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-cascade","tag-durango-and-silverton-narrow-gauge-railroad-co","tag-headlines","tag-weather"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/27023","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=27023"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/27023\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":79579,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/27023\/revisions\/79579"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/26622"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=27023"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=27023"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=27023"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=27023"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
