(Screen Capture via Zoom)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>At their Tuesday meeting, the Montezuma-Cortez RE-1 school district heard from residents about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-journal.com\/articles\/residents-push-montezuma-cortez-board-to-hire-athletic-trainer\/\" id=\"link-8af26dda76f0686032e4f011b666acd1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loss<\/a> of the school\u2019s athletic trainer and discussed the mill levy effort and a board vacancy in District A.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\"><strong>Superintendent<\/strong> r<strong>eport<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Superintendent Tom Burris announced Phil Casper as interim executive director of human resources, saying that Casper \u201ccomes with a long line of experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also announced that HVAC issues in three schools would be mediated.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\"><strong>Student<\/strong> <strong>Academic<\/strong> <strong>Services<\/strong> r<strong>eport<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Executive Director of Student Academic Services Jim Parr addressed focus objectives for the new school year and provided information on the upcoming principal leadership retreat.<\/p>\n<p>Parr shared goals including developing and weaving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.relay.edu\/professional-education\/leadership-programs\" id=\"link-ede5ef0dedb98ff5b3fdd1618bb37957\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RELAY<\/a> systems and processes into regular processes, developing and refining curriculum and curricular guiding resources, developing common assessments that support curriculum and identifying and sharing best practices with common assessments.<\/p>\n<p>According to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.relay.edu\/\" id=\"link-b68716fea815ad5d31e4e79e719d435d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>, RELAY\u2019s programs \u201cprepare teachers and leaders to build a more just world where every student has a clear path to a fulfilling life\u201d using \u201cpractice-based, equity-centered and ongoing professional learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The district is working with RELAY to provide coaching and best practice support for administrators and school leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will have a \u2018coach\u2019 from RELAY working with each of our schools administrative teams for the next year and they will be tailoring the support around data driven instruction, data meetings and observation and feedback to support classroom instruction,\u201d Parr told <em id=\"emphasis-5cc5eb8ffd85c30d8e3af4977b0ba9fb\">The<\/em> <em id=\"emphasis-b413fb8dd69ec81ef789b7ad38445327\">Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The principal leadership retreat is July 22-24 at the Echo Basin Lodge. The Colorado Department of Education and RELAY are helping plan the event\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Participants\u2019s discussions will include safety and incident command teams, RELAY and CDE development of various protocols, lesson planning review, data driven instruction and backward planning.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\"><strong>Residents a<\/strong><strong>ddress<\/strong> <strong>the<\/strong> b<strong>oard <\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Public comment centered on the athletic trainer position, but others raised other grievances.<\/p>\n<p>Pamela Robison told the board about an encounter with Burris that underscores the \u201cculture and climate of our current school district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Robison, the previous administration asked to obtain her master\u2019s of education in school counseling so she could be a counselor at Manaugh Elementary on \u201can emergency basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While working toward the degree, Robison said, she was called into Burris\u2019 office, put on administrative leave for an investigation of her transcripts, then fired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was very aggressive and demeaning to me, and said, \u2018I should take back every penny I ever paid you,\u2019\u201d Robison said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Robison, the investigation showed no issues with her transcripts, and an email from the lawyer who was part of the investigation said she had done nothing wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, she has gone on to work in child abuse prevention. She said that bringing up past and present trauma can help prevent further trauma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are bringing hope,\u201d Robison said. \u201cI want us to look at this as we are bringing hope to the Montezuma-Cortez school district. In order to do that, unfortunately, we have to look at the negative that has come into our school district recently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former RE-1 school board candidate JJ Lewis addressed the board, saying that Burris had contacted his employer \u201cnumerous times\u201d in an attempt to \u201calter my career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ask you, Mr. Burris, to please stop,\u201d Lewis said.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis spoke of the loss of teachers and staff and noted that incoming international teachers wouldn\u2019t adequately fill the gaps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just a Band-Aid to a larger problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>To conclude citizen comments, Burris\u2019 daughter Abby Burris spoke, praising her father for his work in the district.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard Mr. Burris is the most unprepared superintendent in the history of Cortez,\u201d Abby Burris said. \u201cThis could not be farther from the truth. As someone\u2019s who\u2019s so closely observed his work, I can attest to the incredible, positive change he has brought back to our schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abby Burris shared that Tom Burris had fostered a \u201csupportive and encouraging\u201d learning environment in the district, and his dedication had resulted in \u201creal, tangible results for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe district was struggling, academically, financially and structurally, with different departments acting independently, creating inefficiencies and hindering progress,\u201d Abby Burris said. \u201cThe board asked him to fix it, and that\u2019s exactly what he\u2019s done.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Other discussions<\/div>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-x-im-unordered-list\">After citizen comments, the board spoke briefly of the mill levy effort, which was discussed in their June meeting.<\/div>\n<p>The survey regarding the potential mill levy was sent out to the community received a 60% positive ranking from the nearly 1,000 respondents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to march forward with the mill levy effort,\u201d Burris said.<\/p>\n<p>If passed, the mill levy would help raise teacher salaries to around $50,000 for teachers in the district.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-x-im-unordered-list\">The board announced that Rafe O\u2019Brien resigned from his board seat in District D.
