Another sign instructs turning vehicles to yield to pedestrians.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jim Mimiaga\/The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Cortez Police Department and city recently announced the development of the Cortez Safety Action Plan 2024 in conjunction with Bohannan Huston, a civil engineering <a href=\"https:\/\/bhinc.com\/\" id=\"link-575bf00966066eb35fd92635dbc870e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">group<\/a> in Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project aims to provide a road map to achieve zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries in Cortez for all modes of transportation, including walking, biking and driving,\u201d the Cortez Safe Streets\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortezsafestreets.com\/\" id=\"link-96862eefe2a2767779ffd6367abf5187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> websit<\/a>e says.<\/p>\n<p>The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration\u2019s Safe Streets for All program.<\/p>\n<p>It will rely on community input and feedback about vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle safety in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Along with gathering community input, the plan will analyze crashes and help identify potential safety improvement projects.<\/p>\n<p>The interactive website has been dubbed Cortez Safe Streets, with a tagline of \u201cBe aware, show your care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the Cortez Safe Streets\u2019 website, residents can access an interactive<a href=\"https:\/\/engage.bhinc.com\/cortez-safety-action-plan\" id=\"link-b1f789c1784b868ec2bd280de2ac2d82\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> ma<\/a>p that allows them to report safety issues or concerns in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Details about focus groups later this year are forthcoming, but interested residents can sign up on the website and be part of a mailing list that will provide updates about actions taken to improve safety.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the website launch, data collection and review will occur this summer, and focus groups and safety recommendations will develop in fall.<\/p>\n<p>This winter, the initiative will prioritize projects.
