(Shylee Graf\/The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>A Mancos resident was fatally shot by Montezuma County deputies on Thursday after he refused repeated commands to drop the weapon, said Sheriff Steven Nowlin.<\/p>\n<p>The resident, John Thompson, 42, suffered several gunshot wounds and died at the scene after the deputies performed emergency medical aid on him, according to a news release from Nowlin.<\/p>\n<p>The deputies were dispatched to 37813 Road M north of Mancos after the Montezuma County Sheriff\u2019s Office received a call at 9 a.m. Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The call was from Thompson\u2019s aunt, who was reportedly concerned for her disabled sister \u2013 Thompson\u2019s elderly mother \u2013 who lived with him.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"naviga-map\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=37.386859%2C-108.356168&amp;z=15&amp;output=embed\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Map\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<p>The night before, at 10 p.m. Wednesday, the Sheriff\u2019s Office received a call from Thompson\u2019s mother and dispatched deputies to her home, as she expressed concerns for her safety. She said Thompson was \u201carmed and acting crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When deputies arrived, Thompson \u201cwas cooperative and showed no signs of being a threat,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, at 6:45, the La Plata County Sheriff\u2019s Office was trying to locate Thompson after he \u201cpointed a gun at a La Plata County resident\u201d and left in a gray Dodge pickup truck.<\/p>\n<p>For these reasons, a few hours later, at 9 a.m., Thompson\u2019s sister made that call to the Montezuma County Sheriff\u2019s Office requesting a welfare check.<\/p>\n<p>When the two deputies arrived at 9:35 a.m., Thompson was in the driveway and went to the gray Dodge pickup and \u201cretrieved a large-caliber rifle and approached the deputies, in a threatening manner,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson\u2019s mother was inside and safe. Neither of the deputies were injured, either.
