(Jerry McBride/Durango Herald)Jerry McBride

The Montezuma County Fair Ranch Rodeo drew a crowd on Friday night as 13 teams competed in events designed to test their skills on a working cattle ranch.

Ranch rodeo events included calf branding, the scramble and wild cow milking. All three were timed competitions.

The challenge in calf branding was roping a calf from a tightly packed herd in a small pen. Once the calf was pulled from the group, team members on foot simply tapped the calf with an unheated brand and released the calf back into the pen.

In the scramble, teams had four steers; one to be tied, one to be trailered and two to be penned in five minutes or less.

Wild cow milking required teams to cut a numbered cow from a herd, drive her across a line, rope her and milk a few drops into an empty water bottle. Teams who exceeded three minutes or did not extract enough milk for it to drip out of the bottle posted no time.

Ranch rodeo fans were able to bet on teams in a Calcutta style auction. In total, the crowd placed $10,200 worth of bets, most of which went to charitable donations.

The results of the rodeo were:

Calf Branding

First Place: Cow House, 0:13.

Second Place: Cross Breed, 0:20.

Third Place: 3-O, 0:30.

Scramble

First Place: Cross Breed, 2:55.

Second Place: Cow House, 2:56.

Third Place: Rogers Ranches, 3:15.

Wild Cow Milking

First Place: Cow House, 0:48.

Second Place: Misfits, 0:57.

Third Place: WC Cattle Co., 1:01.

Overall

First Place: Cow House, $3,850.

Second Place: Cross Breed, $2,350.

Third Place: Rogers Ranches, $1,600.

Calcutta auction payout

First Place: $3,587.

Second Place: $2,350.

Third Place: $1,076.

[28,29

post-26287","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-headlines","tag-newsletter
["GET
