(Bailey Duran\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Editor\u2019s note: <\/strong><em id=\"emphasis-bd011c62eec07a920fea1a89ceac2c34\">Bailey Duran of Cortez has continued to report for The Journal while visiting South Korea to study the language. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, tens of thousands of people lined the streets of Seoul from the Sungyemun Gate to the Gwanghwamun Gate to celebrate the 76th anniversary of South Korea\u2019s military.<\/p>\n<p>It was also a show of the military strength of the U.S. and South Korea\u2019s military alliance in the wake of increasing hostility with North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>While the parade\u2019s start was set for 4 p.m., thousands of people had already gathered on the street near the U.S. embassy on the parade route at 2 p.m. Elderly, families, young people and foreigners alike gathered to view the large  parade marking South Korea\u2019s Armed Forces Day for the second consecutive year.<\/p>\n<p>This year, South Korea\u2019s president Yoon Suk Yeol declared that this Armed Forces Day would be a national holiday.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=6a39a531-c5fb-5783-a9cd-fbd587a46a6c&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1179\" height=\"1775\" alt=\"Tanks, missiles, aircraft and more were featured in the parade. (Bailey Duran\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The parade was held to \u201cdisplay the military\u2019s dignity and combat capabilities\u201d while \u201cboosting the morale of the armed forces,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/english.seoul.go.kr\/october-2024-cultural-events\/\" id=\"link-7f971bb0b8e37b675f9922b836db3a0a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">description<\/a> of the event.<\/p>\n<p>In South Korea, all able-bodied men are required to serve in the armed forces for 18 to 21 months. A Korean man\u2019s compulsory <a href=\"https:\/\/elaw.klri.re.kr\/eng_service\/lawView.do?lang=ENG&amp;hseq=25744#:~:text=Every%20masculine%20gender%20of%20the%20Republic%20of%20Korea%20shall%20be,the%20age%20of%2018%20years.\" id=\"link-d3f0ce3a15986136cee065a0722ea119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">service<\/a> comes into effect at the age of 18, but certain instances allow for postponement, as long as they are enlisted by the time they are 28, according to the South Korean Ministry of National Defense. In certain instances, postponements are granted past the 28 year-old mark, with the maximum age of postponement being 35 to 37 years old.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea\u2019s male celebrities and elite athletes are also required to serve in the military, no matter their status. One of the only exemptions is winning a medal at the Olympic Games or Asian Games. (@rkive Instagram)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Around 5,000 South Korean troops and 250 U.S. troops participated in the parade, along with over 40 U.S. and South Korean aircraft and fighter jets and more than 100 pieces of military equipment such as tanks, military-grade vehicles and more.<\/p>\n<p>One of the noted highlights by parade organizers was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nhk.or.jp\/nhkworld\/en\/news\/20241001_28\/\" id=\"link-b3f1eb9353ce8baf589eb3142069cd34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unveiling<\/a> of South Korea\u2019s new intermediate range ballistic missile, the Hyunmoo-5. (Bailey Duran\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The missile is reported to be able to carry an 8-to-10 ton warhead.<\/p>\n<p>The parade also included a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/branches\/air_force\/2024-10-01\/south-korea-military-parade-lancer-15366070.html\" id=\"link-4aed174569199604a1b20a4f6f8eed3d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flyover<\/a> by a U.S. B-1B Lancer, dubbed the \u201cSwan of Death,\u201d marking the first time the bomber has appeared for this kind of demonstration in South Korea. The jet\u2019s flight sparked backlash from North Korean leaders, who expressed their disdain over the jet\u2019s flight on the Korean Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea referred to the parade as a \u201cmilitary bluff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other aircraft included military Apache helicopters, flying below the tops of the street\u2019s skyscrapers, F-35 jets and a KF-21, among others.<\/p>\n<p><!-- gallery:fade38a3-c6fb-4a80-bfe7-da4573ca16af --><\/p>\n<p>Since May and as recently as last week, North Korea has launched thousands of balloons into South Korea that contain feces, garbage and other hazardous materials. Residents and visitors are alerted when the balloons arrive, and are urged to leave them alone and alert police of their location.<\/p>\n<p>In response, South Korea has been using huge speakers to play popular K-pop songs, like BTS\u2019s \u201cDynamite,\u201d over the border, as North Korean citizens are prohibited from listening to k-pop and most Western music.<\/p>\n<p>The start of the parade included a sword demonstration from individuals dressed as Korean warriors, followed later by the entrance of Yoon and other government and military officials.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after, the first jets flew over, coloring the cloudy sky with jet smoke in purple, yellow and pink. Military helicopters followed the jets, hovering above the tanks rolling through the street.<\/p>\n<p>The street was lined with various sizes and types of tanks, military vehicles, missiles, drones and more. The branches of South Korea\u2019s military and their bands marched through the streets.<\/p>\n<p>People cheered as each unit of the parade passed by, with many people waving South Korean and U.S. flags. (Bailey Duran\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Toward the end of the parade, members of the U.S. military, including the U.S. military band, marched in solidarity with the South Koreans.<\/p>\n<p>To close out the parade, two more jet flyovers occurred to the cheers of the crowd while a giant South Korean flag was lifted into the sky near Gwanghwamun Palace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the North Korean communists started the Korean War,\u201d Yoon said, \u201dour military fought bravely and shed blood to protect the free (South Korea).
