(Hattie Miller\/Courtesy Photo)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>This year, the Sunflower Troupe will perform its first Halloween show, <em id=\"emphasis-accf6f121f056cfa84e7a87793b1d8e5\">Maniac<\/em> <em id=\"emphasis-333bb9747f2927177835a245334ab849\">Lake<\/em>, from Oct. 25 to Nov. 3. The show is also the world premiere and full production of the play, something the troupe noted is a Sunflower Theatre first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTruth, illusion and sanity are at play in this darkly humorous, postmodern horror story,\u201d the troupe said.<\/p>\n<p>The show also \u201crepresents a new direction\u201d for the theater, as it is rated R, for mature, adult audiences only.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em id=\"emphasis-2482f766811bc1da507c7f8f2b7ea2ea\">Maniac<\/em> <em id=\"emphasis-d19ba500812bf422d846fc7a9bc503bb\">Lake<\/em> is a bumpy ride filled with twists and turns, punctuated with one huge final revelation and a terrifying ending,\u201d the troupe said. \u201cIt\u2019s not all scary, though. This racy, dark-humored script will make you giggle and squirm in the same moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The play was written by fourth-generation Coloradan Jeff Carey, who died of ALS in 2019. His sister Julie Carey shared his script with the troupe. According to the troupe, Jeff spent 30 years completing this play, with the completion of Act I in 1987 and Act 2 in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe complete version of <em id=\"emphasis-dce151f84a875671f7937e791234f7ce\">Maniac<\/em> <em id=\"emphasis-54e230958ce4c4eb3ca6af731868e50a\">Lake<\/em> was workshopped at the Denver\u2019s Avenue Theater in 2016 and Benchmark Theater in 2017, but never fully produced until its 2024 world premier at our very own Sunflower Theatre,\u201d Julie Carey said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=dc751c02-0369-5ddb-9940-79b30fa8de4a&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"874\" height=\"1328\" alt=\"Jeff Carey around the time he wrote the first two acts of Maniac Lake. Julie Carey told <em id=\"emphasis-45feacebeb4b8a33c99c37359adb5d66\">The<\/em> <em id=\"emphasis-b68b4dd98226d91d527ebb66c6f7c83f\">Journal<\/em> that from early childhood, Jeff wanted to do anything that was creative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll Jeff wanted to do was create, whether it was drawing, painting, acting, writing or making films with his Super 8 camera, most of which featured dramatic death scenes,\u201d Julie said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that Halloween was his favorite time of the year, and he even turned their old Victorian home into a \u201cbooming haunted house enterprise\u201d for his Eagle Scout project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs his little sister, when I wasn\u2019t attending his performances, I was recruited to act in his creative projects,\u201d Julie said. \u201cHe courageously fought a lifelong heavyweight battle with bipolar disorder, an experience which colored much of his work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carey earned his BFA in acting at New York University and an MFA in Playwrighting at the National Theater Conservatory. He was also a member of the playwrights unit at the Denver Center Theatre Company, Playwrights Horizons and the Organic Theatre Company in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>His plays have been produced across the country and in London, England.<\/p>\n<p>He worked for Hades Haunted House in Chicago for 10 years acting and designing before he began developing content for the website Haunted America.<\/p>\n<p>He published five children\u2019s books and write six children\u2019s plays, which have been produced by Creede Repertory Theater, The Coterie in Kansas City and Maple Tree Repertory.<\/p>\n<p>Carey was also a visual artist and had a \u201cone-man retrospective show\u201d of over 300 pieces of his art at the Phantom Gallery in Denver and the San Diego Art Institute. He authored and illustrated many children\u2019s books and magazines as well as creating the \u201ciconic\u201d character Reynard Blanc from the two-volume serial cyber-novel \u201cReynard Blanc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His work, \u201cboth haunted and whimsical,\u201d can be found on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tjeffersoncarey.com\/\" id=\"link-b7bf8c1186b177fb05f9924cf21d2ccc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> www.tjeffersoncarey.com.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJeff always strived to put his audiences in the position where they didn\u2019t know quite how to feel, whether it was to laugh, be horrified or cry,\u201d Julie Carey said.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the troupe cast members include Gene Reininger and Hattie Miller, who play a \u201cpassionate\u201d couple on a date at a \u201chaunted\u201d remote cabin in the mountains. Miller, along with playing one of the characters, also directs the play. Aaron Lesse plays Officer Burke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was immediately drawn to <em id=\"emphasis-83c3305d64890bb3c186ab618f3e2f20\">Maniac<\/em> <em id=\"emphasis-97ae900e83697c7fb74229b88ac15f0d\">Lake<\/em>. From the title, to the awkwardness of the characters, to the daring topics intertwined with the full array of human emotions,\u201d Miller told <em id=\"emphasis-c68365fb5f6733693b80b2bd627c501d\">The<\/em> <em id=\"emphasis-8adb45a5272a4e88d9746371d454a89e\">Journal<\/em>. \u201cI immediately knew I wanted to direct it as a Halloween show for the grown ups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The haunted cabin is based off Carey\u2019s family cabin near Conifer, Colorado, according to the troupe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t afraid to mention the unmentionable and he does it in such a playful way. I immediately connected with the humanity of it all,\u201d Miller shared. \u201cI wanted to share that with the community in hopes that we can all feel a little safer being our authentic selves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller added that she hopes the show will help bring awareness to mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarey shines the spotlight on mental illness, something he struggled with most of his life,\u201d Miller said. \u201cIt creates a unique window into the mind of someone who struggles with conditions like depression, bipolar and psychosis. I am hopeful that this production will help our community gain understanding and compassion for anyone dealing with these conditions, whether it is themselves or someone they love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opening weekend will take place on Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. The following weekend, there will be a 7 p.m. showing on Friday, Nov. 1 through Saturday, Nov. 2.
