The Cortez Police Department put out a notice on Oct. 10 warning people to watch out for people making fake photos of Hurricane Helene and its damage in a ploy for money or personal information.<\/p>\n

The release said there\u2019s an image of a girl holding a puppy \u201cto tug at your heartstrings and make you feel like you should donate\u201d.<\/p>\n

But beware, because \u201cit\u2019s totally fake,\u201d\u2019 it said.<\/p>\n

To avoid scams, look closely at photos. Often, they\u2019ll have \u201cweird details\u201d or errors.<\/p>\n

A sure way to avoid a scam is to donate to known charities through their official sites. Or, at the very least, do due diligence in ensuring where you\u2019re sending money is legitimate: \u201cDon\u2019t rush into donating or clicking links right after a disaster,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n

Some accredited charities include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n
