(Courtesy Town Marshal Justen Goodall)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Starting April 1, bear-proof bins will be required in Mancos.<\/p>\n<p>People will have to make a \u201creasonable effort\u201d to contain their trash to prevent bears and other wildlife from getting inside, said Town Marshal Justen Goodall.<\/p>\n<p>A reasonable effort looks like a chain over the trash or some sort of \u201clatching device\u201d that \u201cwill withstand opening by wildlife and remain closed when on their side or upside down,\u201d according to Chapter 7 Article 8 in the Mancos Municipal Code from 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Since the trash collector will have to unhook the cans to dump the trash, costs associated with garbage collection will likely go up, Goodall said.<\/p>\n<p>The move to enforce this code comes after two large bears were removed from the town this fall, \u201ctrapped within feet of the Mancos School Dumpsters,\u201d Goodall said in a statement to the Town Board on Wednesday, Oct. 23.<\/p>\n<p>Though the dumpsters at the school are technically compliant, they were overfilled, and that\u2019s how the bears got in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe common denominator was trash being unsecured in town,\u201d Goodall said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=0ca23f73-0293-52b2-93fb-e1d63ba8276b&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2667\" alt=\"A noncompliant trash can. But if they\u2019re trapped a second time, they\u2019re euthanized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo bears are now sentenced to be euthanized the next time they are trapped,\u201d said Goodall. \u201cThese bears are not problem bears, they did not attack or harm anyone or pets. They simply were trying to survive the upcoming winter and found the easiest food source.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the bears are hibernating this winter, Goodall intends to educate the public about the problem and upcoming enforcement, as he will be issuing citations for noncompliant trash cans with no \u201creasonable effort\u201d to contain their trash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe speak about being good stewards of resources, mainly water.
