(Bailey Duran\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The city of Cortez is going green this month to help support veterans.<\/p>\n<p>The Greenlight a Vet initiative, which takes place every November, shows support to the veterans who call Cortez home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us honor our veterans for an entire month rather than Veterans Day alone by changing one light to green in a visible location \u2013 on your porch, your home or at your office and keep it glowing every day during the month of November as a symbol of appreciation and support for our veterans,\u201d the city proclamation read.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative was formally signed by Cortez mayor Rachel Medina on Oct. 24, and Lanette Candelaria is promoting it.<\/p>\n<p>Many city buildings are getting in on the action, along with residential homes.<\/p>\n<p>Both Medina and Candelaria said Slavens True Value Hardware and other area businesses often stock up on green light bulbs for November.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the city buildings that change their lights to green for the month include City Hall, the Cortez Recreation Center, the Cortez Public Library and the city\u2019s Industrial Park, according to Candelaria.<\/p>\n<p>The color green is used because it symbolizes \u201chope, renewal and well-being,\u201d and \u201cgreen light\u201d is a military term that is used \u201cto activate forward movement,\u201d Candelaria said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica\u2019s veterans are some of our nation\u2019s bravest, hardest-working men and women.
