(Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>An atmospheric river swept into Colorado on Monday night, which is forecast to blanket Southwest Colorado mountain passes with snow in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fire hose is getting turned on,\u201d said Dennis Phillips, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.<\/p>\n<p>The storm system is expected to move out by Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>A<a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/showsigwx.php?warnzone=COZ022&amp;warncounty=COC067&amp;firewxzone=COZ295&amp;local_place1=Durango%20CO&amp;product1=Hazardous+Weather+Outlook&amp;lat=37.28&amp;lon=-107.88\" id=\"link-0b4133e97d90ecf6ca46d4644429231e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> hazardous weather outlook <\/a>warning is in effect for most of Colorado and a winter storm warning is in effect in the San Juan Mountains, including the communities of Telluride, Ouray, Silverton and Hesperus.<\/p>\n<p>The NWS is predicting up to 36 inches of snow on Red Mountain, Coal Bank and Molas passes; up to 40 inches is possible locally on Wolf Creek Pass. With warmer, moisture-heavy storms, forecasters were less certain exactly at what elevation rain will turn to snow throughout various locations of the state, Phillips said.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=03c87933-13a8-5fbb-8208-d8ac2ad79d14&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1199\" alt=\"Cattle graze as snow changes to rain on Tuesday north of Durango. (Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cIt takes a degree or a half a degree to switch stuff over to snow,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cRight now it looks like \u2026 above maybe nine, and for sure above 10,000 feet, they\u2019re just going to get hammered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Little snow is expected to accumulate in Durango.<\/p>\n<p>The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is predicting the avalanche danger will spike later in the week in the southern mountains thanks to the rapid accumulation of new snow in some places atop a weak, unsupportable layer.
