The Denkai Sanctuary announced Tuesday that it has canceled its animal wellness clinic scheduled for this weekend because the veterinarian cannot attend.<\/p>\n

People who planned to attend on Saturday are encouraged to attend the next clinic, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Denkai Store, Veterinary and Pet Rescue Center, 209 W. Main St. in Cortez.<\/p>\n

The clinics are walk-in and first-come, first-served. Individuals can complete necessary paperwork in advance online or when they arrive.<\/p>\n

Services will include vaccinations, microchipping, deworming and basic issues with eyes, ears and skin.<\/p>\n

Sanctuary director Floss Blackburn said the sanctuary has been working for four years to raise funds for a low-cost veterinary clinic in Southwest Colorado.<\/p>\n

According to Denkai, many animals suffer because of a veterinary shortage and lack of access to basic and emergency care.<\/p>\n

\u201cDenkai is aiming to help alleviate such suffering through establishing a multivet practice,\u201d Blackburn said.<\/p>\n

The practice has \u201cbasic equipment\u201d after receiving a $29,000 grant, but still needs $106,000 for remaining equipment and to afford a veterinarian and veterinary techs.<\/p>\n
