{"id":24584,"date":"2024-12-05T17:50:18","date_gmt":"2024-12-06T00:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/last-suspect-in-farmington-inn-shooting-gets-6-months-in-jail\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T22:56:26","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T04:56:26","slug":"last-suspect-in-farmington-inn-shooting-gets-6-months-in-jail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/last-suspect-in-farmington-inn-shooting-gets-6-months-in-jail\/","title":{"rendered":"Last suspect in Farmington Inn shooting gets 6 months in jail"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=84d71210-6cb1-51e6-8245-d3186c2ffc80&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" alt=\"Jose Acosta, 19, entered a plea agreement Dec. 2 in the case of a man shot and the Farmington Inn.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Jose Acosta, 19, entered a plea agreement Dec. 2 in the case of a man shot and the Farmington Inn.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The last suspect in a shooting case that left a man paralyzed entered a plea agreement Monday in the 11th Judicial District Court.<\/p>\n<p>Jose Acosta, 19, pleaded no contest to a third-degree felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, admitting that there was enough evidence to prosecute him of the crime.<\/p>\n<p>The charge was in connection to an Aug. 3, 2023, shooting at the now-defunct Farmington Inn, where Kevin Cambridge, 37, and his family were staying because they had \u201cno where else to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The property on Scott Avenue had been plagued with criminal activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCambridge stated he knew the hotel was not an ideal place for him and his family, but he said it was only supposed to be temporary, and they had nowhere else to go,\u201d according to court documents.<\/p>\n<p>On the day of the shooting, Acosta was at the Farmington Inn with Berenise Avila, 36, Avila\u2019s 15-year-old son, a 12-year-old, a 7-year-old, and Jeremy Webb Jr., who at the time was 15.<\/p>\n<p>Avila, who also lived at the property, reportedly was the instigator in the attack on Cambridge. She reportedly argued with Cambridge over his children and then, pounded on his door shouting, \u201cCome out here! Don\u2019t be a (expletive)! Man up! Let\u2019s shoot this guy! I\u2019ll shoot anybody. I\u2019m going to shoot this mother (expletive) Native!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Cambridge went outside, Avila told Webb to shoot him.<\/p>\n<p>Avila previously admitted to a fourth-degree felony charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and entered a no-contest plea for a fourth-degree felony charge battery on a peace officer.<\/p>\n<p>Acosta, the other adult with the group, also told the 15-year-old Webb to shoot Cambridge by saying, \u201cDo it now,\u201d according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n<p>Webb, who shot Cambridge in the back, was sentenced as an adult in the case to six years.<\/p>\n<p>During Acosta\u2019s plea, Cambridge told District Judge Curtis Gurley that he is paralyzed from the shooting, which changed his life \u201cin a matter of seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When these \u201ckids showed up and wanted to mess with me, I never thought I would be shot in the back by a kid, never thought a kid would have a gun,\u201d he said. The injury has kept him from supporting his family financially.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope these guys know later on of the impact to myself and my family.
