Debi Tracy Olsen/Special to Tri-City Record

Anytime is a good time to teach children about kindness, responsibility, counting and the love of reading, but the Christmas season seems a particularly apt time to do so.

Those very important goals were behind the “Reading for Holiday Bucks” program conducted by the Bloomfield Public Library. The brainchild of children’s librarian Stacey York, the program signed up kids to age 14 to read from October through November to earn holiday bucks. “Every 30 minutes earned one library dollar,” said Vera McGrath, library and cultural center director.

Children could read whatever they wanted.

“They got a little log book, and they wrote down the name of the book and how many minutes they read, and then they would tally up the minutes,” McGrath said.

In the back of the book was a little wallet where they could collect their library holiday cash.

The library stocked a holiday “store” using a $1,300 donation from Masonic Lodge Daylight 80 in Aztec. Beginning Dec. 1, the reading tally stopped and children could shop the shelves of the library’s store, with the intention of buying holiday gifts for family and friends. A gift wrapping table in the store is available so children can wrap their gifts.

This year was the first trial run for the program, advertised only in the library to be sure the idea would work.

“We definitely want to do it again next year. We’ll do a longer registration period so there is more opportunity, and we’ll also advertise outside of just the library,” she said.

Still, the program racked up some impressive totals, with one child topping the program earning $110, which represents 3,000 reading minutes, or 50 hours of reading.

The librarians feel the program was a success. “It’s a teaching moment,” McGrath explained. “It’s showing kindness, because they are not buying for themselves, they are buying for their family and friends. It includes teaching responsibility and counting, and, obviously the love of reading. It’s our main goal, just to get kids to read,” she added.

Earned holiday bucks can be redeemed at the library’s holiday store during normal library hours until Christmas: Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

[1060,1240,1222,799,28,1241

post-24493","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-arts-entertainment","tag-aztec","tag-bloomfield","tag-farmington","tag-headlines","tag-kirtland
["GET
