It estimates that the rules, which apply to vehicles under 10,000 pounds, excluding school buses, will save 50 lives and prevent 500 injuries annually.

Rear seat belt usage lags behind front seats, at 81.7% vs. 91.6% in 2022. Half the passenger deaths in 2022 involved unbelted individuals in the backseats of vehicles.

The final rule amends the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, “Occupant Crash Protection,” which previously affected just the driver seat.

Before the new rules, it was the driver only who received the alarm. Beginning in September 2026, the length of the alarms will grow, and in September 2027, they will be required for backseats.

“Wearing a seat belt is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent injury and death in a vehicle crash,” said NHTSA Chief Counsel Adam Raviv. “While seat belt use has improved for decades, there’s still more we can do to make sure everyone buckles up. These new requirements will help to increase seat belt use, especially for rear seat passengers, by enhancing reminders for vehicle occupants to buckle up.”

The automotive emergency brake system will be fully in effect by September 2029.

Jerrod Noble, public information officer at Central Consolidated School District in Farmington, indicated student safety was paramount.

“We will comply, and we’ll do our best and keep our kids safe,” he said. “The drivers will ensure the kids are buckled in and taken home.”

Here’s how it works: AEB uses sensors to detect when the front of a vehicle is close to crashing into a vehicle or pedestrian and automatically applies the brakes. It will work both day and night.

“The new vehicle safety standards we finalized today will save hundreds of lives and prevent tens of thousands of injuries every year,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is not only making historic investments in transportation, it’s also ushering in a new era of safer travel by ensuring new cars and light trucks are equipped with automatic emergency braking, making our roads safer for drivers and pedestrians alike,” Buttigieg said.

“Automatic emergency braking is proven to save lives and reduce serious injuries from frontal crashes, and this technology is now mature enough to require it in all new cars and light trucks. In fact, this technology is now so advanced that we’re requiring these systems to be even more effective at higher speeds to detect pedestrians,” said NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman.

“Most new vehicles already come with AEB and we expect that many cars and light trucks will be able to meet this standard ahead of the deadline meaning even more lives will be saved thanks to this technology,” Shulman said.

Tobias Brack, a student at San Juan College, is an intern at the Tri-City Record.

[28,29

post-24316","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-headlines","tag-newsletter
["GET
