(Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald file)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">du1-i-syn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>A blast of arctic air is expected to plunge much of Colorado and other parts of the country into single-digit or even negative temperatures Friday evening. Although Southwest Colorado won\u2019t see the most extreme weather, residents of Cortez, Durango, Bayfield and nearby communities should prepare for cold.<\/p>\n<p>The core of the cold air mass is expected to remain in the Dakotas and southern Canada, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Kris Sanders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPortions of Southwest Colorado are just getting clipped by this air mass, as opposed to fully taking over all the state,\u201d Sanders said.<\/p>\n<p>In low-lying communities along U.S. Highway 160, morning temperatures are expected to hover around 0 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we have clear skies, that\u2019ll be the big deciding factor,\u201d Sanders said.<\/p>\n<p>Durango\u2019s overnight emergency warming center, which is a low-barrier place for people to spend the night when temperatures dip below 15 degrees, will be open through Tuesday, organizers confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durangoherald.com\/articles\/overnight-warming-center-in-durango-shutters-temporarily\/\" id=\"link-25020ad629d587b747e4fc9100e1e6b4\" target=\"_blank\">center closed briefly last wee<\/a>k after someone vandalized the property and broke in, however, it reopened Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Gusty winds pushing 45 mph will accentuate colder temperatures, Sanders added.<\/p>\n<p>Snowfall in the San Juan Mountains will be limited, especially south of Red Mountain Pass, which is expected to collect no more than about 6 inches over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The blast of arctic air is expected to move out of Colorado by midweek, Sanders said.<\/p>\n<p><em id=\"emphasis-bd8c74631138873ad6640818169c3c4f\"><a href=\"mailto:rschafir@durangoherald.com\">rschafir@durangoherald.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>expected to intensify cold weather as Durango\u2019s overnight warming center reopens<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":23987,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[28,414,88],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-23986","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-headlines","tag-weather","tag-weather-news"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23986","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=23986"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23986\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":78348,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/23986\/revisions\/78348"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/23987"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=23986"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=23986"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=23986"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=23986"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
