(Courtesy photos\/Dimery Plewe and Avery Wright)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>In the latter half 2024, two Montezuma-Cortez High School alumni received Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the week honors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rmacsports.org\/news\/2024\/10\/17\/womens-basketball-fort-lewis-dimery-plewe-garners-rmac-womens-golfer-of-the-week-honors.aspx\" id=\"link-9ff717ac7631a50f3d6141e53e0a359e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dimery<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/rmacsports.org\/news\/2024\/10\/17\/womens-basketball-fort-lewis-dimery-plewe-garners-rmac-womens-golfer-of-the-week-honors.aspx\" id=\"link-f212d0b8d103dc2ad3479301221c9879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plewe<\/a>, a junior on Fort Lewis College\u2019s women\u2019s golf team, was named the RMAC women\u2019s golfer of the week in October, while <a href=\"https:\/\/minesathletics.com\/news\/2024\/12\/12\/track-and-field-mines-trio-earns-rmac-weekly-track-field-awards.aspx\" id=\"link-8160a7f80ed88ed49cb57d3dc687f759\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Avery<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/minesathletics.com\/news\/2024\/12\/12\/track-and-field-mines-trio-earns-rmac-weekly-track-field-awards.aspx\" id=\"link-ec2418deaeb445d3428c6a4efa07055a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wright<\/a>, a junior at the Colorado School of Mines for track and field, received the RMAC women\u2019s field athlete of the week honor in December.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Dimery Plewe<\/div>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=85eb6a6c-b5ac-5d2c-9867-9023845fff4c&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1069\" height=\"1336\" alt=\"Dimery Plewe plays golf for Fort Lewis College. (Courtesy photo\/Dimery Plewe)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>After graduating from Montezuma-Cortez High School, <a href=\"https:\/\/goskyhawks.com\/sports\/womens-golf\/roster\/dimery-plewe\/9477\" id=\"link-79c8232b7266f7eeed12a5e1be929c06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plewe<\/a> served a mission in Hungary with the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before her collegiate golf career really got underway. It was during her time in Hungary that she fully realized her passion for golf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was able to go to two driving ranges while serving,\u201d Plewe said. \u201cIt was a long time away from golf, but I loved what I was doing over there, and it helped me realize that I did want to come back and golf and take it to another level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Golfing has been part of her life since childhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up golfing with my family, but have only participated in competitive golf for five years,\u201d Plewe said. \u201cI love golfing with my family and the time that it allows us to spend together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=f5a88bf4-7224-5046-a0b0-bfc2027858b2&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Dimery Plewe is the first golfer from the Fort Lewis women\u2019s team to win a tournament since 2015. She made it to the state championships both years, placing eighth her junior year. Because of COVID-19, Plewe didn\u2019t compete her senior year.<\/p>\n<p>After returning from Hungary, Plewe wanted to compete and win tournaments. While she was speaking with colleges, she met Shea Sena, Fort Lewis\u2019s coach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was new to the program but familiar with my golf game. I told him my personal goals, and he shared his vision for the team, and they really clicked,\u201d Plewe said. \u201cHe was excited about it, which really made a difference to me. I felt like I could achieve my goals here at Fort Lewis and help the team reach theirs as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before golfing for Fort Lewis, Plewe golfed for Idaho State University for two years.<\/p>\n<p>At the Nick Turner Invitational at Hillcrest Golf Club this fall, Plewe became the first Fort Lewis women\u2019s golfer to win a tournament since 2015. Plewe\u2019s 1-over-145 for the tournament was a career best.<\/p>\n<p>As she finishes up her junior year as a Skyhawk, Plewe said her goal is to perform well enough at the championship tournament to be able to continue competing in the postseason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am really glad that I was able to get my first win as a Skyhawk, and I definitely want to chase more of those this spring. As an individual I want to perform well enough at the RMAC Championship to get into postseason,\u201d Plewe said. \u201cAs a team we have the ability to be in the mix for tournaments, and we want to break the Fort Lewis team record for a score on a tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=901b7b5a-1a6e-574f-a9c5-1fde4dc83acc&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"1323\" height=\"1066\" alt=\"Dimery Plewe with women\u2019s golf head coach Shea Sena (left) and her sister and women\u2019s assistant coach Kiselya (Plewe) Salcedo (right) after winning the Nick Turner Invitational. (Fort Lewis Skyhawks)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Plewe added that she was honored to be named RMAC\u2019s golfer of the week after her win at the Nick Turner Invitational.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing named RMAC golfer of the week after our last tournament was exciting. It was a good way to go into the offseason with a win at our home tournament and then being named golfer of the week,\u201d Plewe said. \u201cI worked hard all fall to get my golf game back to where I could compete after not playing in so long. It was a great reward to see the work pay off and get excited for our spring season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plewe\u2019s sister, Kiselya (Plewe) <a href=\"https:\/\/goskyhawks.com\/sports\/womens-golf\/roster\/coaches\/kiselya-salcedo\/927\" id=\"link-4b42b64104f92cdac92ee063788b13c4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salcedo<\/a>, also recently joined the Skyhawks team as an assistant coach.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\">Avery Wright<\/div>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=cd58a254-3b69-5672-b73e-be127ed4e90e&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"3000\" alt=\"Avery Wright competes in the heptathlon and pentathlon for the Colorado School of Mines. (Avery Wright\/Courtesy Photo)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/minesathletics.com\/sports\/track-and-field\/roster\/avery-wright\/16774\" id=\"link-287984885f4df3f652c8ba88869c4980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wright<\/a>, a junior at the Colorado School of Mines, began competing as a heptathlete and pentathlete for the Orediggers after her graduation from MCHS. She has already qualified for the spring 2025 NCAA championships in the pentathlon and 60-meter hurdles.<\/p>\n<p>The pentathlon is an indoor event that combines 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and an 800-meter race over the course of one day, while the heptathlon is an outdoor event that combines the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter long jump, javelin and the 800.<\/p>\n<p>Though Wright was primarily a sprinter in high school, she said that she told the coach at the School of Mines that she wanted to try something new. Once she arrived at Mines, she began training in the heptathlon and pentathlon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could always jump pretty well, and I was pretty strong,\u201d Wright said. \u201cI honestly just wanted to try everything and see how it went. \u2026 I love it so much. Every day is a new day, and the variety is amazing. \u2026 Looking back, it\u2019s so crazy to think that I couldn\u2019t even hurdle or throw, and now here I am qualified for nationals in hurdling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright began running in elementary school in Dolores but officially started track in sixth grade at the Dolores Middle School.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=92d0c013-9435-5a2c-9398-d007cc2950d4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Wright competes in the 60-meter hurdles, one of the events in the pentathlon. (Avery Wright\/Courtesy photo)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Though she also played sports like volleyball and basketball, the individual and team aspect of track combined is what ultimately caused her to choose track as the sport to pursue at the collegiate level.<\/p>\n<p>She emphasized the variety in the team and training help keep her motivated to train and improve herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a blast. I love it,\u201d Wright said. \u201cIt\u2019s very long practices, like two hours a day. Sometimes, I\u2019ve had four-hour practices, but we break it up. Tomorrow, I\u2019ll throw in the morning for an hour and then I\u2019ll go long jump in the afternoon. It changes almost every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with qualifying for nationals, Wright also recently broke her pentathlon (5,852 points) and 60-meter hurdle (8.52 seconds) school records. She first broke these records in December 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving those two records and my heptathlon record outdoors are really proud accomplishments, and winning the individual RMAC title and the RMAC titles with my friends,\u201d Wright said. \u201cWe, the women\u2019s team, won conference the last few years, which is really exciting. We won the first-ever conference title (for Mines) indoors in 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the remainder of her junior year, Wright shared that she hopes to have fun, keep improving and become a first-team All-American, which is top eight in the nation. As for goals further in the future, Wright said she is just trusting God\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to become first team All-American,\u201d Wright said. \u201cI think that\u2019s one definite goal in mind, and I think another is to just have a blast with it. I know it kind of seems like a silly goal, but I always compete my best and I always enjoy it when I have fun. I love what I do.
