Blue Ivy Carter looks on from right.(AP Photo\/Chris Pizzello)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">(AP Photo\/Chris Pizzello)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>LOS ANGELES \u2013 Beyonc\u00e9 won album of the year for \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d at <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/grammy-awards\" id=\"link-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunday\u2019s Grammys,<\/a> delivering her \u2013 at last \u2013 the show\u2019s elusive top award.<\/p>\n<p>The superstar, who is both the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/beyonce-grammy-awards-history-timeline-832043f07b62da92528f841542608248\" id=\"link-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most awarded and nominated<\/a> artist in Grammys history, has been up for the category four times before and many feel she has been snubbed by its top honors.<\/p>\n<p>In winning album of the year with \u201cCowboy Carter,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 has become the first Black woman to win the top prize in the 21st century. The last was Lauryn Hill with \u201cThe Miseducation of Lauryn Hill\u201d 26 years ago. Before her was Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston. That means Beyonc\u00e9 is only the fourth Black woman to win album of the year at the Grammys.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Los Angeles Fire Department presented Beyonc\u00e9 with the trophy, one of several times the show reflected the recent wildfires that burned thousands of homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been many, many years,\u201d Beyonc\u00e9 said in her speech. \u201cI want to dedicate this to Ms. Martell,\u201d she said, referencing Linda Martell, the performer who became the first Black woman to play the Grand Ole Opry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe finally saw it happen, everyone,\u201d host Trevor Noah said, nodding to the long overdue achievement for one of music\u2019s transcendent artists.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick Lamar <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/grammys-2025-updates-winners\" id=\"link-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won song and record of the year<\/a> for his diss track \u201cNot Like Us,\u201d taking home two of the night\u2019s most prestigious awards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re gonna dedicate this one to the city,\u201d Lamar said before shouting out Los Angeles area neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>It is the second hip-hop single to ever win in the category. The first was Childish Gambino\u2019s \u201cThis Is America.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\"><strong>The Weeknd mends fences, Chappell Roan challenges music industry<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>The Weeknd has mended his fractious relationship with the Grammy Awards with a surprise performance of his new single, \u201cCry For Me\u201d and \u201cTimeless\u201d with Playboi Carti.<\/p>\n<p>His decision is a direct reflection of the changes the Recording Academy has made to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/grammy-awards-recording-academy-voting-diversity-women-c8f6d88c3821bb54efdb04fe1a3650b6\" id=\"link-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diversify its voting body,<\/a> CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said in his introduction. The Weeknd has been openly critical of the Grammys organization, dating back to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/arts-and-entertainment-general-news-bd51c2d183314c21bd723a6cc4f06f20\" id=\"link-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020 when he wrote on Twitter:<\/a> \u201cThe Grammys remain corrupt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was just one of many pleasant surprises Sunday night. Chappell Roan was named best new artist.<\/p>\n<p>She read a speech from a notebook, speaking directly to major labels and the music industry, instructing them to \u201coffer a living wage and health care, especially to developing artists.\u201d She described getting signed as a minor, getting dropped and entering the workforce during COVID-19 with no work experience and no health care. She asked them to treat artists like \u201cvaluable employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLabels, we got you,\u201d she concluded her speech. \u201cBut do you got us?\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\"><strong>Beyonc\u00e9 and Chappell Roan give Grammys a country theme<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>In one of the biggest moments of the evening so far, Taylor Swift presented the award for best country album to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/beyonce-knowles\" id=\"link-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyonc\u00e9<\/a>. She became the first Black woman to ever win in the category.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenre is a cold word to keep us in our place as artists,\u201d she said in her speech. \u201cI\u2019m still in shock. Thank you so much for this honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/beyonce-knowles\" id=\"link-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyonc\u00e9<\/a> entered the night as the leading nominee.<\/p>\n<p>A little bit of the wild west, a little bit of West Hollywood. Roan brought a rocking version of her \u201cPink Pony Club\u201d to the Grammy stage. Joined by a posse of dancing clown cowboys, she sang from atop a giant pink horse.<\/p>\n<p>Beyonc\u00e9 will bring her Grammy-winning \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d to stadiums on both continents, starting in Los Angeles before making her way to Chicago, the New York metropolitan area, London, Paris, Houston, Washington and Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>A BeyHive presale begins Feb. 11 at 12 p.m. local time. General ticket sales will begin Feb. 14 at 12 p.m. local time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\"><strong>Los Angeles on the mind<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>In incorporating the wildfires throughout the show, the Grammys put the spotlight on the city\u2019s resiliency.<\/p>\n<p>Noah\u2019s opening speech was dedicated to those affected by the fires, promising a show that not only celebrates them, but one that also celebrates \u201cthe city that brought us so much of that music.\u201d The Grammys have also allotted ad time to be used by local businesses affected by the fires.<\/p>\n<p>As the show neared its end, Noah announced that viewers had contributed $7 million to relief efforts Sunday night so far.<\/p>\n<p>The show kicked off with a powerful opening performance of Randy Newman\u2019s \u201cI Love L.A.\u201d by Dawes \u2013 whose <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/los-angeles-fires-celebrities-homes-lost-6cdc06b85b737c79739318a853e64642\" id=\"link-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">members were directly affected by the Eaton fire<\/a> \u2013 backed by John Legend, Brad Paisley, Sheryl Crow, Brittany Howard and St. Vincent.<\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-element naviga-subheadline1\"><strong>Star studded performances and victories<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/grammys-2025-updates-winners\" id=\"link-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first televised award<\/a> went to Doechii for best rap album for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/best-albums-2024-cc1c5c3690daebf29601ca4392801c7b\" id=\"link-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cAlligator Bites Never Heal.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tears were immediate. \u201cThis category was introduced in 1989. Two women have won, Lauryn Hill \u2013\u201d she said, correcting herself. \u201cThree women have won. Lauryn Hill, Cardi B and Doechii.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Will Smith introduced a tribute to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/quincy-jones\" id=\"link-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">late, great, legendary producer Quincy Jones.<\/a> \u201cIn his 91 years, Q touched countless lives, but I have to say he changed mine forever,\u201d he said. \u201cYou probably wouldn\u2019t even know who Will Smith was without Quincy Jones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/quincy-jones-dead-a9e31c7e39c448d8971519f47a22dd21\" id=\"link-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died in November<\/a> at age 91. Kicked off by Cynthia Erivo, accompanied by Herbie Hancock on piano, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/movie-review-wicked-cynthia-erivo-ariana-grande-784258a509b990dbd34206c4991e2c6b\" id=\"link-13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the \u201cWicked\u201d star<\/a> sang Frank Sinatra\u2019s \u201cFly Me to the Moon.\u201d Then came Lainey Wilson and Jacob Collier with \u201cLet the Good Times Roll,\u201d followed by Stevie Wonder and Hancock busting out \u201cBluesette\u201d and \u201cWe Are The World.\u201d For the latter, they were joined by student singers from two schools that were lost in the LA-area fires.<\/p>\n<p>The Beatles\u2019 \u201cNow and Then,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/beatles-last-song-now-then-release-fbce70071b4624f0d90bd18347f20fc6\" id=\"link-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which used AI technology,<\/a> took home best rock performance. Sean Lennon accepted the award on behalf of his father John Lennon. \u201cAs far as I\u2019m concerned, it\u2019s the best band of all time,\u201d he said of the Beatles.<\/p>\n<p>First time winners were abundant. They included Carpenter, Roan, Doechii, Charli xcx, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/amy-allen-interview-grammys-sabrina-carpenter-23f69f74777eecba3194cadccd43bbfe\" id=\"link-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">songwriter Amy Allen,<\/a> M\u00fasica Mexicana star Carin Le\u00f3n, French metal band Gojira and country folk artist Sierra Ferrell.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=4731b89c-dbc9-53a6-be92-b7db960bab25&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Beyonc\u00e9 accepts the award for best country album for \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d during the 67th annual Grammy Awards Sunday in Los Angeles.
