(Screen capture via NBC Motorsports YouTube)

The first triple crown of the Supercross season was marked by a hard-fought win by Chase Sexton, a finish barely off the podium for Eli Tomac and an ACL injury for Jett Lawrence.

The Round 4 triple crown took place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Unlike typical Supercross 450SX races that last 20 minutes plus one lap, the triple crown races are 12 minutes plus one lap. This lack of eight extra minutes leaves very minimal room for error. Racers get points based on their performance each round, and the racer with the least amount of points after the third race is the winner.

After the last triple crown race finished, Sexton was named the champion with eight total points. Cooper Webb placed second with nine points, Ken Roczen third with 10 points and Tomac fourth with 11 points.

In the third race, Jett Lawrence left the track after in first lap. After the race, it was announced that Lawrence had torn his ACL and will require surgery, ending his 2025 Supercross season.

In the first race, Webb claimed the hole shot, with Malcolm Stewart in second, Hunter Lawrence in third and Jett Lawrence close behind in fourth after being “bumped around” at the start.

Tomac raced in 12th after the start.

Webb held a powerful lead until the very end while the Lawrence brothers battled for second and third place. By the three-minute mark, Tomac had moved to seventh and Jett Lawrence chased after Webb in second.

Meanwhile, Sexton and Roczen had passed Hunter Lawrence, and were fighting for third.

Though Jett Lawrence almost crashed right before the finish line, he came in second behind Webb. Sexton took third and Tomac finished in sixth.

In the second race, Jett Lawrence and Roczen came out of the gate side by side, but Roczen narrowly claimed the hole shot ahead of Jett.

Stewart managed to pass Jett Lawrence to take second while Tomac tried to gain ground after starting in last place. Jett Lawrence’s bike was “out of control” on the whoops in the first lap, hitting Stewart, but both racers managed to prevent a crash. Jason Anderson passed Stewart and Jett for second.

By the five-minute mark, Sexton was in third and Tomac in fourth. Tomac was chasing after Sexton in “Tomac beast mode,” according to commentators.

“If you want to see a display, watch that No. 3 right there. This dude is rolling,” commentators said about Tomac.

Tomac then attempted to pass Sexton on the whoops, but Sexton “held him at bay.” Around the next turn, the two racers barely avoided a collision.

“It’s getting dicey here,” commentators said.

The second race ended with Roczen in first, Jett Lawrece in second, Sexton in third and Tomac in fourth.

In the final race, commentators said it could be any of the top racers’ race to lose, noting that the three winners of the past three rounds, Jett Lawrence, Tomac and Sexton, were in contention.

Hunter Lawrence claimed the hole shot with Justin Barcia, Sexton, Aaron Plessinger and Tomac hot on his heels. Jett Lawrence drove off the track, holding his right leg off the ground.

Sexton soon took over the lead position with Tomac chasing after him. The two racers battled side by side before Tomac claimed the first place position.

“This man is on fire,” commentators said.

At the six-minute mark, Tomac was still in first with a five-second lead over second-place Sexton. Though he cut a little into Tomac’s lead before the end of the race, he was unable to catch Tomac, making Tomac the winner of the third triple crown race by four seconds.

Sexton placed second, clinching his overall triple crown win.

The next Supercross race is Saturday, Feb. 8 in Tampa, Florida.

2025 450 Supercross standings1.
