On Wednesday, Feb. 5, thousands demonstrated across America in response to President Donald Trump\u2019s actions in office.<\/p>\n

About 20 people participated in Cortez, waving signs and gathering in front of the Welcome Center on Main Street for an hour.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s necessary,\u201d one demonstrator said. \u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of people slowing down and waving. The response has mostly been positive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe it\u2019s the warm weather,\u201d another said.<\/p>\n

The movement was organized online under #buildtheresistance and #50501, which stands for 50 protests, 50 states, one day, according to The Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe the people have to stand up to make change,\u201d a protester said. \u201cI\u2019m here to call attention to what\u2019s going on. I don\u2019t think most people are paying attention. If they were, they\u2019d be outraged.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Cortez, the protesters said they were \u201cshocked and dismayed\u201d by what Trump has done in the few short weeks he\u2019s been in office.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not OK. It\u2019s not constitutional, or respectful of human rights,\u201d a protester said.<\/p>\n

So this demonstration, they agreed, \u201cis not political. It\u2019s moral and ethical.\u201d<\/p>\n

One woman who asked not to be named made a sign that said, \u201cNo food on a dead planet. Love, your mama.\u201d<\/p>\n

If Trump deports all our farmworkers, she said, there will be nobody there to harvest crops when it comes time, \u201cand the food will rot in the fields.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another protester created a sign with farmworkers in mind: \u201cEggs, $25 a dozen\u201d it read.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Trump gets rid of farmworkers, all food prices will go up,\u201d she said. \u201cNot just eggs.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said she was glad to see that Rep. Al Green, a Texas Democrat, filed impeachment charges on Trump for wanting to \u201ctake over\u201d Gaza.<\/p>\n

Green called the proposal a \u201cdesperate deed\u201d that would result in ethnic cleansing, according to an article by The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAction is the antidote to despair,\u201d one woman said, quoting Joan Baez.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t sit still as Social Security and human services are taken away,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Another woman had recently retired, and expressed her fears of Medicaid and other like services going away.<\/p>\n

Others were there to \u201cstop the damn white patriarchy\u201d and to \u201ctalk about civility\u201d with one another, having conversations \u201cto bring sides together.\u201d<\/p>\n

One questioned, \u201cDid you vote for Elon Musk?\u201d<\/p>\n

Some cars drove by, waving middle fingers and Trump hats, but, like they said, the response was mostly positive.<\/p>\n
