(Photo by Scott Heins\/Getty Images)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Scott Heins<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>After as many as 100,000 New Mexicans get kicked off of Medicaid when the COVID health emergency is declared over, 30 days later, nearly everyone getting food benefits in the state will see that payment drop by one-third, according to the state\u2019s Human Services Department.<\/p>\n<p>HSD manages the state\u2019s Medicaid and SNAP programs, which together serve 1,081,988 people, or 51% of the state\u2019s entire population.<\/p>\n<p>Human Services Secretary David Scrase told the Legislative Finance Committee on Wednesday the department will need more money to make up for what will be lost when the federal government declares the emergency over, along with more staff and better tech systems to get people who are dropped back onto the rolls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to need to get more people on board to do this right,\u201d Scrase said. \u201cBut please, you will get calls. I think you will get a lot of calls from your constituents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>160,000 additional people came onto the Medicaid rolls as a result of a requirement for continuous health care coverage during the emergency, Scrase said.<\/p>\n<p>If many of those people flood the offices in person or the phone lines trying to access health care or food assistance, \u201cthat will strain our capacity,\u201d he said. More than 15% of HSD\u2019s staff positions are <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/nmhsdscorecard\/goal-4?pli=1\" id=\"link-37151cac8703965a4f7c21effa667477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unfilled<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a $254 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/handouts\/ALFC%20121222%20Item%2016%20-%20FINAL%20LFC%20HSD%20FY24%20Budget%20Request2022_12_14.pdf\" id=\"link-586814d08a92927432c00ea0edb8d570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shortfall<\/a> in the Medicaid program when the emergency ends and additional federal dollars stop coming to New Mexico, Scrase said.
