{"id":23337,"date":"2025-02-28T22:57:07","date_gmt":"2025-03-01T05:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/cortez-asks-for-public-input-on-its-safe-streets-safety-action-plan\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T22:34:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T04:34:17","slug":"cortez-asks-for-public-input-on-its-safe-streets-safety-action-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/cortez-asks-for-public-input-on-its-safe-streets-safety-action-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Cortez asks for public input on its Safe Streets Safety Action Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=a8493e6b-fece-58c9-a053-2490bf33c682&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"640\" height=\"406\" alt=\"\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, the city of Cortez first started a project to make its streets safer.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, it\u2019s hosted open houses, created focus groups and hired consultants to create a Safe Streets Safety Action Plan that will help the city realize its \u201cVision Zero\u201d goal.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is a global one.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s \u201ca commitment to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all,\u201d according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortezsafestreets.com\/\" id=\"link-1e402ca8b581a2d51c2ecbac233eee3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plan also emphasizes the protection of Vulnerable Road Users \u2013 pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists \u2013 who are at greater risk of severe injury in a crash,\u201d according to a press release from the city.<\/p>\n<p>City officials, the Cortez Police Department and consultants at Bohannan Huston Inc. came together to draft the plan, which is now available for public review until March 31.<\/p>\n<p>Already, community members have been \u201chighly engaged\u201d in the creation of the plan.<\/p>\n<p>More than 40 people participated in the focus groups and open houses, 797 responded to the safe streets survey and left 409 comments on an interactive city map.<\/p>\n<p>The plan addresses a slew of issues, namely \u201cspeeding, running stop lights and stop signs, distracted driving, poor yielding to pedestrians, intoxicated driving, lack of road striping and visibility issues,\u201d the news release said.<\/p>\n<p>To review the plan in full, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortezsafestreets.com\/\" id=\"link-9ab10888ad732b099d5dc28fe0328963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CortezSafeStreets.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On that site, there\u2019s a form to submit comments and recommendations.
