(Joel Priest\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>CORTEZ \u2013 Coming off a year in which the M-CHS boys basketball team earned their highest finish as a member of the Intermountain League, the Panthers earned a bounty of recognitions on the all-conference team.<\/p>\n<p>Four Panthers from the boys team and Taylor Whited from the M-CHS girls squad landed all-IML honors after a season in which both programs advanced to the 4A postseason in their first year back in the larger classification. Boys head coach Mike Hall landed the Coach of the Year award after guiding the team to a jump from fourth in 2023-24 to second place in this winter\u2019s league standings.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=98e6e7b0-3b86-5e4c-b324-5816c02e148e&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2099\" alt=\"M-CHS senior Tay Wheat goes up for a shot. (Erika Alvero\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>The Panthers (17-7) enjoyed their first season back above .500 since the 2018-19 season, thanks in large part to an upperclassmen core that has been instrumental in the gradual improvement over the past few years. Seniors Tay Wheat and Caidin Leonard both earned recognition, with Wheat named to the first team, while Leonard landed on the honorable mention squad.<\/p>\n<p>In their final year on the hardwood, Wheat and Leonard both averaged double figure scoring, while also combining to lead the team in assists.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b6677a4e-c2d8-58ec-a692-451e3c1e04ce&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" alt=\"Caidin Leonard of Montezuma-Cortez High School looks to pass the ball against Durango High School on Tuesday at DHS. Jerry McBride\/Durango Herald)<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jerry McBride<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Sophomore Trey Hall joined Wheat on the first team, while junior Trace Hartsoe made the honorable mention list. Hall also tallied a double figure scoring average, while pacing the Panthers in rebounding and steals. Hartsoe also provided steady scoring and rebounding as part of a high-energy starting five.<\/p>\n<p>The impressive win total \u2013 their third highest in a season in the last 20 years \u2013 catapulted the Panthers into the postseason for the third straight year.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=d7762282-96b9-5857-bd6c-9b614f80e936&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1753\" alt=\"M-CHS junior Trace Hartsoe prepares to take a shot while facing stiff Bayfield defense. (Erika Alvero\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Meanwhile, the girls team navigated their way back into the postseason in back-to-back years, thanks in large part to their leading scorer Taylor Whited. M-CHS (7-17) leaned on Whited\u2019s ability to impact the game on many levels, leading the Panthers in scoring, assists, and steals. Whited also etched her name into the M-CHS record books with a single-game school record 42 points on her way to landing on the All-IML first team.<\/p>\n<p>All-conference performers were selected by coaches vote after the conclusion of the season.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=5c328c97-3afa-565e-a793-74663ccfd693&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1985\" alt=\"Panthers senior Taylor Whited jumps up for a shot.
