(Aaron Lewis\/Special to The Journal)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to maintain momentum just two weeks after an anti-Trump protest drew a crowd of more than 600 people in Cortez, the local League of Women Voters is sponsoring yet another protest this Saturday, April 19.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an offshoot of a national protest organized by a group called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiftyfifty.one\/\" id=\"link-c34a984927c1a002f173951648de79eb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50501<\/a>, which stands for \u201c50 protests, 50 states, one movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those attending the one in Cortez are asked to bring food for the local pantry, nonperishable items, or clean, warm clothes to support unhoused people in the park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had 600 at our last event; let\u2019s top it at this one!\u201d an email from the League of Women Voters of Montezuma County reads.<\/p>\n<p>At 11 a.m., community members are invited to assemble at the Welcome Center in Cortez and to bring signs expressing whatever is \u201cmost concerning to them, whether it be public land or what\u2019s happening to our Medicaid,\u201d to name a few concerns that Karen Sheek, the president of the local League of Women Voters, mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>From there, protesters will march \u201cend to end\u201d on Main Street, said Sheek.<\/p>\n<p>Dodd said it\u2019s a chance to come together peacefully, and noted how cities and towns across America are gearing up for another National Day of Protest on Saturday in a more \u201cindividualized\u201d way than the \u201cHands Off!\u201d protest on April 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shows solidarity in a way that fits towns best,\u201d Dodd said. \u201cEach one has its own take on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some places are using the upcoming protest as an extension of \u201cHands Off!,\u201d while others are calling it a \u201cTesla Takedown\u201d or a \u201cDay of Action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other towns are tying their demonstrations to Earth Day, and others still are incorporating the 250th anniversary of the beginning of the American Revolutionary War, as April 19 marks the start of the war with the Battles of Lexington and Concord.<\/p>\n<p>Dodd said the \u201chope\u201d is that it\u2019s \u201cone hour of chanting and solidarity,\u201d and how it\u2019s a chance \u201cto be with others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to continue building a coalition of opposition and solidify it,\u201d said Dodd.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Attendees are asked to bring food items to donate to pantry<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":22689,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[21,28,29],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-22688","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-cortez","tag-headlines","tag-newsletter"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22688","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=22688"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22688\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":77811,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22688\/revisions\/77811"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/22689"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=22688"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=22688"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=22688"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=22688"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
