(Christian Burney\/Durango Herald)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Durango and Bayfield area residents aren\u2019t letting the Trump administration\u2019s illegal deportations and tariff tantrums escape the public eye.<\/p>\n<p>Around 850 area residents converged at Buckley Park where speakers railed against President Donald Trump\u2019s and his administration\u2019s forced removal of immigrants, and about 700 participants marched to 835 East Second Ave., the Durango office of U.S. Rep. Jeff Hurd, to continue demonstrating.<\/p>\n<p>The protest, which Indivisible Durango member Karen Pontius described as a joint Hands Off! and 50501 (50 Protests, 50 States, One Movement) rally, resonated with thousands like it across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the afternoon, approximately 100 people, including residents of Ignacio and Farmington, demonstrated in Bayfield in a grassroots effort called Pine River Rising.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=b483e806-9722-5767-9116-1bf8e6f428b6&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1126\" alt=\"Around 850 area residents converged Saturday at Buckley Park, where speakers railed against President Donald Trump\u2019s and his administration\u2019s forced removal of immigrants, and about 700 participants marched to 835 East Second Ave., the Durango office of U.S. Rep. (Christian Burney\/Durango Herald)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Organizers and attendees at the protests said they were motivated to action because of the Trump administration\u2019s lack of due process in deporting immigrants and the president\u2019s suggestion U.S. citizens could suffer the same punishment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump takes a (expletive) on our Constitution every day,\u201d resident Amy McClintock said. \u201cHis executive orders are largely illegal. \u2026 He\u2019s a criminal and he\u2019s continuing his criminal behavior in the White House, using our tax dollars for his personal pleasure and gain. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, are starting to take action. But federal elected officials need to \u201cget angrier\u201d and turn up the resistance against the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>She said she would prefer if Sen. (Christian Burney\/Durango Herald)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>She said a rally held in conjunction <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durangoherald.com\/articles\/hands-off-rally-in-durango-draws-out-one-thousand-protesters\/\" id=\"link-880e52888c9c1aeea403c1aa2d58c252\" target=\"_blank\">with Hands Off! rallies around the country<\/a> on April 5 resulted in about 80 new people signing up with Pine River Rising, a grassroots movement that sprouted just several months ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really looking at ways of bringing people in and getting our community even stronger, because I think that helps us feel like we can stand up and we feel brave to use our voices,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Cash said the lack of due process demonstrated by the Trump administration \u201cdominates\u201d his concerns. People turned out regardless of the weather.
