Reigning Champion Wenjun Ju faced fellow countrywoman Zhongyi Tan of China. Ju dominated the match and won before playing the final scheduled games.

This week’s position is from the seventh game of their match. Ju is white; Tan, black. Here, both white’s rook threatens black’s bishop, and black’s king and rook both threaten white’s knight. White’s next move proves that black’s threat is hollow and unable to exchange blows.

The black bishop is cornered and the black rook is two moves away from reaching the eighth rank and defending the bishop. If the knight flees, the black rook checks from g5 and next moves to the eighth rank. White is winning, but there is still life in the position for black.

The simple pawn to b4 by white defends the knight and diffuses the rook check and retreat (see next diagram).

Now, if the black rook checks white from g5, white’s king moves to f4, attacking the rook. The rook escapes the threat and next moves to the bishop’s defense. However, like a pointed Chinese proverb about spreading yourself too thin, white checkmates black with rook to d7 (see next diagram).

Tan resigned after pawn to b4.

The world’s top four women chess players are Chinese, and five Chinese women are ranked in the top 10. Ju has been the Women’s World Champion since 2018, when she defeated Tan, who was then the women’s world champion.

There is an old Chinese proverb: “The first decision of a woman is the most intelligent and the last decision most dangerous.” The women of China have proved over the chess board the truth of this proverb. Of course, any man foolish enough to challenge this self-evident truth should remember another Chinese proverb: “The tongue of a woman is the sword that is never allowed to rust.”

Reach Eric Morrow at ericmorrowlaw@gmail.com or (505) 327-7121.

[29

post-22596","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-newsletter
["GET
