The funding could help pay for medication or clinical staff at the Montezuma County Detention Center to better serve individuals with mental health issues.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Sean Dolan\/The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>To teach interested individuals \u2013 especially those who are likely to find themselves in times of crisis \u2013 there\u2019s an upcoming workshop in Cortez that will cover how to offer emotional support in otherwise stressful situations.<\/p>\n<p>The Psychological First Aid class is free to attend, thanks to Axis Health System and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment\u2019s Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s welcome to \u201canyone interested in learning new skills,\u201d as far as emotional support goes, according to a news release.<\/p>\n<p>People who work in disaster response, are teachers, clergy and\/or church staff, volunteers and, more generally, community members \u201cwho many find themselves in a position to assist survivors in the wake of an emergency\u201d will find the course helpful, the news release said.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees will learn \u201ckey skills\u201d like \u201cassessing and addressing emotional needs, providing psychological support and promoting coping strategies in the aftermath of disasters,\u201d the news release said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticipants will also learn how to identify signs of distress and refer individuals to appropriate mental health resources when necessary,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s on May 6 and 7 in the Montezuma County Sheriff\u2019s Office training room, 730 E. Driscoll St.<\/p>\n<p>May 6 is the Psychological First Aid Class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and attendees must complete that Tuesday class to attend the field response training on Wednesday, May 7 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Register online at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.train.org\/colorado\/welcome\" id=\"link-4c4b927eec253b114d9096171d9b4808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">train.org\/Colorado\/welcome<\/a>.
