When a knight flashes both its right angles, linear-minded rooks are lured into a natural checkmating position. This could even break a queen’s heart.

With this hint in mind please try to find white’s mating attack.

Because black’s bishop targets the white king’s escape square on h2, both black’s queen and rook on d8 threaten mate in two. Black also has material superiority.

White refutes this with a kiss. Its queen steps close to the black king on f8 and checks black on the cheek. Black’s king cannot capture the queen because of white’s knight. Black’s rook thus takes the queen. White’s knight next checks black from e7, which forces the black king over to h8 (see next diagram).

The white knight’s reach extends to both the g8 and g6 squares. If the black king were assaulted along the “h” file, black’s king would be mated. But black’s h7 pawn shields its liege.

White’s rook on h3 crashes through and takes the pawn with check. Black’s king captures the rook on h7. White’s other rook exploits the now open file and slides over to h3, mating black (see next diagram).

The lesson this week is that a knight and a rook make a good match.

Reach Eric Morrow at ericmorrowlaw@gmail.com or (505) 327-7121.

to move and win The chess board is a theater of romance and seduction.
