Ontiveros,\u201d Bloomfield Police Chief Phillip Francisco said in a prepared news release.<\/p>\n<p>The officers negotiated with Armenta for more than eight minutes, but he reportedly refused to comply, the release states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficers decided to arrest him for concealing his identity,\u201d Francisco stated, adding Armenta \u201cremained locked inside his car with the windows up, prompting officers to break a window to conduct the arrest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the window was broken, Armenta reportedly fired a handgun, striking Ontiveros and \u201cnarrowly missing\u201d the other officer, the release states.<\/p>\n<p>Ontiveros is in critical condition at UNM Hospital in Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=03a37cf9-5fcc-50a6-bbd6-764d3dd72df8&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"A bullet hole in the police cruiser of Bloomfield Police Officer Timothy Ontiveros.\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">A bullet hole in the police cruiser of Bloomfield Police Officer Timothy Ontiveros.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">cca<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Armenta\u2019s criminal record dates back to 2013 when he was first arrested on a drunken driving charge. He had other charges of criminal trespass and resisting arrest from 2021 and 2024.
